Understanding the Problems with Car Sharing
I am an experienced five star rated host who has rented out 5 vans for 3 years in the Philadelphia area using the “Turo” car sharing app. Turo is a somewhat different type of car sharing app and a competitor to the Getaway car sharing company. When I read 1 star reviews ( I just read one for Getaway) from people who rented cars they usually blame the company, not the car owner, for mechanical issues. This is very unfair. The responsibility for maintaining the cars is 100% on the vehicle owner. When you pick a car to rent you must read the reviews about the car owner who is renting the car. You always want to pick a 5-star host. These hosts are usually professionals who know the basics of vehicle maintenance and do vehicle inspections after every rental. Given the fact that car sharing usually involves renting older vehicles one must realize that older vehicles sometimes have maintenance issues and that you are taking a risk but at the same time you’re usually getting a great price. I am a mechanic and would never think of renting out a car or one of my vans without first visually checking brakes and rotors and then doing a test ride of at least 10 miles in stop and go and highway traffic. Most individuals who rent cars on these platforms are clueless when it comes to pre-inspecting the vehicles so pick your host carefully
Use Getaround to waste time & money!
Twice in a row now, getaround has failed to notify me that my reservation has been forcibly changed, sending me to a car that doesn’t exist when they could’ve easily notified me before hand. With the first car, I was sent to a location in an unsafe neighbor, miles away, and the car was unaccessible. Upon calling customer service (20 mins on hold) the getaround rep *graciously* offered to cancel my reservation and give me a $20 coupon off my next trip.... how kind! The second time, I specifically booked a getaround in a garage to ensure there would be no issues (like last time) and once again, I show up and the car was miles away, when seconds earlier the GPS had shown it was in the garage. After another 20 minutes on hold I get through to a rep who also *graciously* offers to pay for my Uber across town to the new car, in downtown San Francisco, at 4pm rush hour, on Memorial Day weekend. New car has worse MPG so now we are stuck in traffic for more time, paying more money. Try getaround today to have your trip delayed, a horrible customer experience, and everything will cost more!
Awful and dangerous experiences
I have rented two cars from get around and both had system malfunctions. The first one had a braking problem and the second had a dead battery. Besides the point that they should be screening their cars this wasn’t even the biggest problem I had. I can understand faulty cars but when there is a faulty car and you need to get somewhere their customer service should be available to help and those renting their car should be on standby. Neither of these things are true. The customer service is never available and I was left in the rain not being able to lock the car with the dead battery at 11 pm waiting to get put off hold for over an hour. Then when I left because it was dangerous and late they finally picked up my call and had the audacity to fine me for leaving the car. There was nowhere in the terms and service of their website that explained what to do in this situation but apparently I was supposed to assume that I had to wait with the car for four hours for a battery (that was not my fault that it died) to be fixed.
This company is so terrible. I never write reviews but if I can prevent just one person from the horrendous experiences that I have had then I will consider this worth while.
