Seagate Media

By Seagate Technology

Open iTunes to buy and download apps.

The Seagate® Media™ app gives you easy access to all the photos, videos, music and documents stored on Seagate Wireless Plus, Seagate Central or GoFlex Satellite™ storage devices. To connect to Seagate Wireless Plus or GoFlex Satellite, simply turn on your device and choose the “Seagate Wireless” network from your device's Wi-Fi settings. You can access Seagate Central when connected to your home Wi-Fi network. Choose one of the options from the drop down menu to view your media by category (Videos, Photos, Music or Documents) and then navigate your media library with a traditional file/folder view or choose a visual experience that can include cover art (music & videos) and photo thumbnails.

Seagate Wireless drives create their own Wi-Fi network, so your mobile device can connect directly and stream media without an Internet connection. Videos stream and play with the default media player on your mobile device for a familiar experience. With the option to open files with other apps installed on your mobile device, you can play/view content that isn’t supported by default in iOS. The Seagate Media app also enables you to upload photos, videos and other files from your mobile device to your Seagate Wireless or Seagate Central drive in full resolution and quality, perfect for offloading files to free up space on your Seagate device or keeping an extra back copy*.

Access your media and the Internet at the same time. Seagate Wireless drives can connect to a nearby Wi-Fi network, such as a coffee shop hotspot or your home router and pass through the Internet connection to your mobile device. This enables you to multitask and do things like stream music from a Seagate Wireless drive and check email at the same time.

This app requires a Seagate Wireless Plus, Seagate Central or GoFlex Satellite storage device.

• Access your media library stored on a Seagate Wireless Plus or GoFlex Satellite mobile wireless storage device wherever you are – no Internet required.

• Access Seagate Central from the Seagate Media app anywhere you have a Wi-Fi or 3G/4G connection. Be sure to enter your Username and Password in the “Remote access” tab in Settings to access Seagate Central when not connected to your home network.

• Stream HD videos and begin playback almost instantly and enjoy your music collection, photo albums, and documents too

• Create on-the-go music playlists

• Save files to your mobile device to view when not connected to your Seagate Wireless drive or Seagate Central

• Upload pictures and videos from your mobile device to your Seagate Central or Seagate Wireless Plus*

*Feature not available on GoFlex Satellite mobile wireless storage device.

Not Ready For Prime Time

It's hard to review the app without reviewing the hard drive. This review deals with both. The first thing the documentation advises is to assure that the latest firmware version is running on the drive. It took about 45 minutes to determine exactly how to update. In the documentation they use the word "connect" for both a wired and a WiFi connection to the drive. Functionally they are two very differemt types of connection. As far as the app is concerned, I loaded a bunch of photos onto the drive, in different folders in order to categorize them. In the Photo section of the app, these are all grouped together. So far I have not found a way to group them separately. More importantly, I am not seeing any thumbnails. I have to open each photo to see what it is. I thought maybe it took some time to generate the thumbnails, but after 45 minutes I gave up. Again, there may be a solution to this but I haven't found it yet and I have spent several hours on this thing. I think I will just use it as a backup drive. It will not smoothly fill the role I expected it to. Disappointing.

Easy, exciting and awesome.

I bought this to store movies for watching on my kids iPads. It works just like advertised.
I charged up the hard drive, loaded a few videos on it and then watched them on my iPad. It was great. I didn't have to update the firmware, or reformat anything. It just worked. I even attached it to a second network which was attached to the Internet.
This drive was incredibly easy to get going. I was excited to see how it worked as advertised. It is as awesome as it sounds.
There are still a few things on my wish list. 1. Solid state hard drive. 2. Faster gigabit wifi. 3. Ability to amplify sound. 4. Other shared hard drives on other computers on the network. 5. Use with drop box or sugar sync.
In two words, "love it". If you're thinking of getting his drive you won't regret it. Hats off to seagate. Good job guys.

Piece of Garbage !!

I've used Seagate products for years. And the last 2 stand alone drives I've bought from them were junk. Was looking for an interim solution between constantly buying external hard drives and saving up for a full NAS.

This drive never showed up on my network no matter what methods I attempted. I spent 3 days giving it the benefit of the doubt making attempts without the security enabled - running a hardline vs wireless - nothing worked.

Taking it back this week - getting my money back and investing in a normal NAS. Hoping to hell my aging drives don't fail beforehand.

Seagate - just like Apple and many other companies are making products that are almost too watered down and this drive is the king of the garbage.

I'd take some time and force my way to the drive but since it got warranty on it and still within the return period I'm just not wasting my time.

Another funny thing is that this only comes with a 2 year warranty - Seagate used to put 5year warranties on its products. Seems rather odd.
