Reading is so wonderful
Netflix tells me what shows I may like next based on what I've watched. Pandora tells me what music is similar to those songs and artists I listen to. Goodreads is the book version of those two things. Not everyone loves to read and there is no question more difficult to answer than, "what book should I read next?" There are hundreds of thousands of books crossing many genres, epochs, styles, tastes and preferences. I can't tell you how many times someone had given me a book they knew I'd love, but it was CRAP, but this app helps me avoid those frustrations.
First, I went through and added all those books I'd read over the years. It would have allowed me to add all the Dr. Seuss stuff too, but I left that off. Second, I joined some "clubs" (Thousand books to read before you die, Steinbeck club, etc.). Then I added my "friends", mainly Facebook contacts who also had a goodread account. Voila!
Each time I finish a book I add a rating and write a review. My friends do the same thing. The app had given me great book suggestions, and had even given me a few free books...not a bad deal.
Great community, good app, some improvements welcome
I love the GoodReads website, and this app makes it even more pleasurable for me to interact with other readers, and track my own reading progress. I only wish there was a more complete integration between the site and the app: 1. that the app would allow me to input quotes and favorite passages (the way the website does), 2. that it would allow me to access my full profile and timeline, and 3. that I could share directly to my blog on Tumblr or Wordpress. As ebook libraries become more popular, I would also really like to see integration with Scribd or Oyster or Kindle or Calibre: for synchronizing my reading progress, reading notes, and saved books. Referenced links to book reviews and author interviews in literary publications would be another awesome feature. Overall, it's a great app, and I love the GoodReads community. A few small improvements, including a few buggy freezes from time to time, would make the app even better.
Just started to use this app and it's a great tool. I've been wanting to read more books this year and I never know what to read. So it's great that recommendations are given according to the past books read. I also like it how I can have a list of books to read and/or add new ones... Along with being able to read reviews too, which is so helpful! My only and biggest complaint is the auto Facebook posting... Which I find extremely annoying. I think this new feature went into effect of 2015. But every time I add a new book to my list or rate them, I must remember to click off of the Facebook posting button... Otherwise what I post on good reads will appear on Facebook. I wish it was the other way around, that you have to click on the Facebook button to post and not turn off. Or it would be nice to have a feature that could turn off Facebook posting altogether for those people who want to opt out of dual postings.
