Classroom is a free service for schools, non-profits, and anyone with a personal Google account. Classroom makes it easy for learners and instructors to connect—inside and outside of schools. Classroom saves time and paper, and makes it easy to create classes, distribute assignments, communicate, and stay organized.
Classroom is designed to help teachers create, collect, and grade assignments paperlessly, including time-saving features like the ability to automatically make a copy of a Google Document for each student. It also creates Drive folders for each assignment and for each student to help keep everyone organized.
Students can keep track of what’s due on the Assignments page and begin working with just a click. Teachers can quickly see who has or hasn't completed the work, and provide direct, real-time feedback and grades right in Classroom.
With the mobile app for iOS, students and teachers can view their classes and communicate with their classmates in real time. Students can open their assignments and work on them right from their iPhone or iPad. Teachers can keep track of who has turned in work and grade the assignment - at school or on the go. Students and teachers receive notifications when they have new content in Classroom, so they are always up to date.
There are many benefits of using Classroom:
Easy to set up
Teachers can add students directly or share a code with their class to join. It takes just minutes to set up.
The simple, paperless assignment workflow allows teachers to create, review, and grade assignments quickly, all in one place.
Students can see all of their assignments on an assignments page, and all class materials (e.g., documents, photos, and videos) are automatically filed into folders in Google Drive.
Classroom allows teachers to send announcements and start class discussions instantly. Students can share resources with each other or provide answers to questions on the stream.
Affordable and secure
Like the rest of G Suite for Education services, Classroom contains no ads, never uses your content or student data for advertising purposes, and is free.
Camera: Needed to allow the user to take photos or videos and post them to Classroom.
Microphone: Needed to enable audio capture for recording videos to be posted to Classroom.
Photos: Needed to allow the user to attach photos or videos to Classroom. Photos or videos posted to Classroom will be stored on Google servers in order to show them in Classroom.
* Teachers can now increase student engagement with the Student Selector. The Student selector randomly picks students from your class roster, so you can enourage participation from the entire class.
* Bug fixes and performance improvements.
Ratings and Reviews
I’m a student, so I was required to download this app for school purposes, and it glitches so much. Every single time it updates they say that they’re making it “better,” but really, it just messes up all my classes. It has deleted my classes before, and because I need to be able to access those classes to be able to get and turn in my work, it affected my grades. The “to do” section seems like it would be really helpful, telling you what you have left to do and when it’s due, but it glitches so much that it’s an inconvenience. I tried to access it the other day to find out what homework I had to finish, and instead of showing me what was due the next day, it displayed all the homework I had ever been assigned for every class I was currently enrolled in, marked as missing even though I had turned it in months ago. This app is terrible, and what makes it even worse is that if they just put a little effort into it, it would make classes more convenient and accessible, but instead it’s doing the opposite. Along with all of that, it’s super slow. Every time I try to open it, it takes an exorbitant amount of time to load, even when literally everything else that I might need WiFi for works fine. Even if I go to a place that I know has faster WiFi in an attempt to fix this problem somehow, the app still takes the same crazy long amount of time to load.
Take the plunge!
This is the first year I’ve taught using Google Classroom, and I have nothing but gratitude for this effective, time-saving platform. Google will continue to add features that are user-friendly and that interact well with a variety of educational apps and software. I’m especially happy to be able to organize by topic, grade quizzes, and export grades to Aries with the latest update. I also appreciate having a “comment bank” feature when grading student writing.
The only feature I wish were better developed is the storage/ organization of past class content. I find myself deleting many assignments at the quarter to free up space and make the classroom page easier to navigate. It would be great if there were a way to archive modules so as not to have to recreate them in the future. Still, most content is easy to pull up from Drive, so it’s not too much trouble to rewrite assignments from the past. I’ve taught using Canvas and PowerSchool- which are quite expensive- and I prefer Google Classroom over both.
Great class management tool but need improvements
I hope the developers actually read this...
First of all, I am very grateful for this tool/app. It certainly makes my life easier as a teacher with two big classes. In general, it is a very helpful tool to manage your class and students. With the addition of the ‘material’ option in classwork, it makes it really convenient to post agenda, handouts, or just information if I want to keep record of them (because the posts on the stream gets pushed down over time). However, on the app, the posts always don’t show as its complete version. The posts are always cut off below the first two lines, which makes it very inconvenient for students who use their cellphone to access more often than on a PC. Some of my students don’t have computer access everyday so it makes it really difficult and a little discouraging for them to keep up with all the information provided online, especially when they are all trying to improve their computer/ internet literacy. I truly hope this issue can eventually be resolved in the next few updates.
