Make "Avoid Tolls" a configurable default setting

I am deducting one star from my rating from last time as punishment for Google ignoring repeated requests to make Avoid Tolls a permanent setting. Listen to the complaints, Google!

The only reason I don't use Apple Maps is that the have no Avoid Tolls option at all. The moment they add one, Google Maps will be gone from my phone.
---
The tips section now gives instructions for using the avoid tolls option. But, there is still no way to make this the default mode. Make the option a permanent setting.

I have no idea what the "popular times" option is, but seems like it was a waste of time to add it rather than addressing the "avoid tolls" option first.
---
Yet another update and still no ability to make "Avoid Toll Roads" the default mode. Listen to your users, Google.

I live near a major toll road. The first thing I always have to do after initial routing is switching on the "Avoid Tolls" option. Why wouldn't this be the default setting anyhow? Either allow the user to save the option as the default or make it the default and put "a shorter/faster route is available for a toll" as a suggested alternate route.

I agree with the other fed-up reviewers

What was once one of the best apps ever has devolved into a practically useless one. Gone are route options. Gone are distance calculations. And with the latest update, I can't even get "Google Siri" to speak the route after her first comment, which is basically getting me out of my driveway. Like I really need help with that one. And then nothing but silence. It would be nice for the app to actually work while I'm driving so I don't have to continue to look down at the app for the next turn. Imagine if I was going somewhere really long distance. Wow. Apparently Google isn't hiring the best navigation-building app geeks, or this app would be even better than it was a few years ago. Instead, it's gotten practically useless. The only other explanation is that Google is trying to stick it to Apple users. Nice, guys.

3.5 ⭐️ Quite adequate, better than most

Ok, it's not perfect, but it's reliable, gives good directions and provides quick access to basic info about destinations (hours, phone numbers, menus, web links). Directions are clear, shows lane details, handles unusual situations (inside shopping centers, parking garages, airports, sports venues, etc.) better than Waze or Apple Maps. Provides walking directions. Allows changes to starting point. Agree about not having good default settings (toll roads, most importantly). Public transportation directions generally good; actually worked well in Cancun, for example).
