Great for voice search, useless as a personal assistant
The search function blows Siri out of the water. It recognizes so many more of the words that I say, even complex medical terminology is often understood by this program. However, it is useless as a personal assistant. 75% of the time I try to get it to remind me of something, I get a blank screen. The 25% of the time it understands and starts to create the reminder, half the time when I try to save the reminder I get an error message saying the reminder cannot be saved at this time. Also needs more complex commands such as remind me every day when I get home to water the plant. The program is also buggy overall. The first time I downloaded it I could not get Google to speak back to me when I has to question. When I read downloaded, everything worked fine. Over all, currently Siri is more reliable but it's search function pales in comparison to Google.
Google remains useful, but is getting to be creepy
Update: now on top of everything else Google insist on asking you to sign in every time you try to use the app. ENOUGH! I don't want to have to close an ad for Google Now every time I open the app. It is time to start using another search service.
Maybe they should change the name to Big Brother. Of course, we live with Google & it has become as omnipresent & uncontrollable as the weather. But it has gotten to be just plain creepy. I really don't want to ask a search engine "How about this weekend?"
Do the folks at Google really want remind us that they track so much of what we do on line that they can suggest what we want to do on the weekend? And is "Hide from Google" an option?
I'll keep using Google, but I wish the app had a way to easily turn off all the suggestions & general "Google is Always With You" features. Knowing they keep track of everything I do is bad enough; I don't like being reminded of it. And the convenience (such as it is) of having Google offer algorithm results, in lieu of my own thinking is not worth the hassle of their adding all sorts of "information" I don't need when I open the app.
Perhaps they could come up with a "Classic Google" that is just a search engine, rather than an app that wants to be a personal assistant, tour guide, advisor and spy with a search engine buried under all the rest. I could go for that.
App's great but update is slow, inconvenient
I've used the app forever and it's great, but the latest update is terrible. The search field takes FOREVER to load now (maybe because of voice search?), so annoying when you need an answer fast. Then the default
Is to bring up your last search when you open the app. The only way to stop that is to set it to forget all your searches, which is annoying when you have to research something. There should be a "remember search history but don't display it when I open app" option. But the main thing is the slowness....so many times, I start typing and then only the last few letters show up because the app wasn't fully loaded. The old one loaded immediately. I'd happily give up voice search for a faster load time!
