Think of Google Maps
In Google Maps there are warnings when a route includes tolls or restricted access roads, before you begin navigating. While Maps is not 100% accurate about these details, at least it tries to alert the user to the restricted elements in a route. Google News does no such thing. Instead it offers up news headlines from publishers who require memberships in order to read the stories being suggested by Google; the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, etc. There are simple solutions of course but this failing makes Google News unappealing and I have stopped using it. Its a time waster rather than the time saver it's advertised to be.
Issues lately
Been using google news on 3 different iPhones for a few years now. The past 6 weeks or so it has been messing up. When I click on s story it does not load or load all the way. Usually just a white page. My answer has been to open it in safari and that works. It works even when the page is all white. I can also hit the top left on an all white page to go back. I'm not sure googles ideal is for me to open half of there links in safari but that is what I have to do. Just did the Apple update put out today and still having the same problems. Any ideas?
It's a sampler
This app does have news headlines, but when tapped the story is from another subscription service. The user is apparently allowed a limited number of stories per outside news source, then, after selecting a headline, the story won't load. Instead the reader is offered a chance to pay for a subscription of that news source. I suppose it's nice to have a way to sample a wide variety of news sources before paying for a subscription, but I think the app's description should CLEARLY indicate that this is what it is. I saw "in app purchases" but I guess I'm not savvy enough to have read between the lines.
