No Group Messages, Lots of Crashes
This app is fine for a first generation... The fact that it has been around years without fixing basic problems, however, makes it a horrible app.
It doesn't support MMS, but since it forwards pictures to my e-mail, I can still get picture messages. Cool. But group messages are sent via MMS on many devices, and so most group messages sent to me go into a black hole. No notice to me or the sender, it just disappears. The few that make it through show up in separate convos by person making it impossible to follow a conversation. It's like trying to read a story when you're given the lines out of order and an unknown number of them have been removed. When I first got this app, it was fine, but two years later, with the rise of the group text, this is now a vital feature.
Also, as others have pointed out, it will delete what you are typing if network is lost--I understand that it can't send while there is no signal, but I ride the subway--I can't even queue a message to send saying "I'm 5 minutes away, see you soon." So I can blast it off in the 5 seconds I have signal at a stop. Again, a vital feature flaw.
Calling with GV is fine. Texting with GV, my entire reason to get this app was to ditch my text plan, will drive you bananas.
iPhone Contacts integration, but still want GV contacts
So I can now call contacts on my iPhone, which is great. But why remove contacts list in GV itself? Personally I sync iPhone contacts, Mac Contacts, and Google Contacts. But there are still times when the three are not in sync, and I still want to access Google contacts. (Especially when you have groups and filter by groups, iPhone contacts are not helpful.)
Another really neat feature in this version is Click2call, which is the real reason I wanted to use Google Voice on iPhone. This way, I can use the handy dialer/contact list to make calls using my home phone or office phone; even when making phone calls using iPhone itself, I can add my GV number as "fav" and save minutes. (You can even tell GV "don't use for calls" from iPhone.)
One point: GV is never meant to be anything like Vonage (sic) and Skype. If you don't find Google Voice useful, this app is useless.
Needs iPad UI, SMS Read Receipts, MMS, SIP VoIP Integration,Speakerphone for vmails
Needs to add a search feature within the texts, also needs to add the option to disable the annoying vibrate/alert when you receive a new text. At least Talkatone allows this! There are many times I do not want this to occur!
No support for SMS read receipts it seems. Please add this!
Needs MMS for pictures/multimedia, SIP VoIP Integration to be complete, like what Gmail Phone Call provides or the Talkatone app, and landscape mode. In fact landscape (in addition to portrait) mode should be equipped by Apple for all apps, IMHO.
Really needs speakerphone sound output when listening to voicemails! Why is there no iPad interface and Retina graphics?
Needs to better update the item counter on the menu screen where it shows text, vmails, etc., sometimes you are viewing a new text, yet it doesn't update and remove the counter. This is REALLY ANNOYING!!!!!! This app is really poorly thought out, the software Product Manager should be FIRED!
Talkatone is WAY BETTER, and makes VoIP calls.
