- Requires iOS6 and higher
I love being able to use google voice in place of regular text messaging, but this app needs major improvement. First of all, I don't exclusively communicate with people who also use google so hangouts is useless to me really. My major complaint is in the layout and the fact that any time someone sends you a text message it starts a new conversation. That is just annoying and clutters my inbox. My second big complaint is not being able to send/receive pictures. It's very inconvenient to have to look in my email every time I get a picture instead of it showing up in the app. Also it is even more inconvenient to have to go to facebook or GroupMe to send someone a picture... I also wish the click to call banner was smaller and allowed more room to view previous texts in the conversation. Besides these issues, the app is fine, I like the look of the update. These issues are pretty large though and should be fixed asap.
I don't like the update!!
I have used Google voice for years, ever since I broke a phone and had to use my iPod to text.
While over time the overall design seemed to look kind of clunky, I didn't mind it, because it was functional. I just used the IOS 8 update and it's awful! Yes, the app is more aesthetically pleasing, but that takes away from the usability of it! The new click to call option in the texting conversation covers up a large portion of the text, and the keyboard with predictive typing also takes up a good deal of it, leaving only a space big enough for a single line of text where you can see the message you're replying to. I find it very hard to manage and would much rather have the click to call tab removed from the text conversations, or at least have an option to toggle it on and off.
Google has NO design sense
I cold accept the hideous design, cluttered and ugly, IF it functioned better than the previous version. I used the old version for years and found it functional and fairly intuitive. This new version uses smaller text, making it harder to read. the pop up when a message comes in when you are in the app is a black black box with text. the previous version had a nice clean design to the dialog boxes. More importantly, these boxes appear away from the typing area. The new box appears directly over the typing area which means you have to stop typing until the popup fades away. When in the list view, new messages are barely distinguishable from old messages. Even help you if you don’t look at them in order, you will be hard pressed to know which are which.
