Google Voice gives you a free phone number for calling, text messaging, and voicemail. It works on smartphones and computers, and syncs across your devices so you can use the app while on the go or at home.
You’re in control
Forward calls, text messages, and voicemail to any of your devices, and get spam filtered automatically. Block numbers you don’t want to hear from.
Backed up and searchable
Calls, text messages, and voicemails are stored and backed up to make it easy for you to search your history.
Chat in groups, with photos
Send group texts and share photos instantly.
Your voicemail, transcribed
Google Voice provides free voicemail transcriptions that you can read in the app or have sent to your email.
Cheap international calling
Make international calls at competitive rates without using your mobile data.
Keep in mind:
• Google Voice is currently only available in the US
• All calls made using Google Voice for iPhone use the standard minutes from your cell phone plan
• Calls are placed through a US-based Google Voice access number, which may incur costs (e.g. when traveling internationally)

version 2.5 missing quick dial
The new Google Voice App for IOS is NOT improved (version 2.5 June 9, 2017). It is missing the Favorite contacts list aka: Quick Dial. The old version of the app was easier to use and allowed me to access the list of favorite contacts. I frequently use google voice to make calls to the same 5-6 international contacts and also to some new numbers. I don't want to have to sort through all of the US contacts on my phone to find the few Favorite contacts that I had before. The Google voice for IOS app shows all contacts on my phone and does not allow me to sort them into groups or to show only the favorites as I once could in a previous version. Please bring back the functionality to sort out the favorites from the other contacts.
Please make the list condensed so only the favorites show on the contact list.
Also, the ability to turn off the recent call list, message inbox, and voicemail would be nice, I only need the quick dial (favorites) and the dial number pad.
Have been using Google Voice almost since it was released, and have ridden through the ups and downs. The new v2 interface looks good, photo integration is great(!), conversation view is wonderful, and the same old integration with Contacts and the Phone apps is awesome.
However, the June 2017 version of Google Voice does not function smoothly on my iPhone 5s. Every action, from scrolling to creating a new message to searching, takes a moment or two to get a response, if the action even registers at all. Not a smooth or efficient experience.
The hold-to-delete conversations is also gone. It's still possible to delete conversations, but it takes 3 steps (and with the all the pauses, that's 5-10 seconds.) Maybe this will we reintroduced after the conversation view has been around long enough, and the risk has been reduced of thinking a single message will be removed.
Still not fully functional with Google's own Gboard
On balance, Google Voice is superior to Hangouts, esp with its Contacts integration and dialer.
Another update, another missed opportunity to make compatible with insertion of Gboard GIFS and pics.
After you open a text message, Google Voice will leave it marked unread, requiring you to reopen it to switch its status to read. Other commenters point this out.
It took months for an update but no noticeable improvement. Still won't paste GIFs or pics from Gboard into a text. That was my issue, which I and others reported numerous times in the app feedback. You'd think a Google product's compatibility with its own keyboard would be a priority, but it isn't.
Dev team is AWOL.
Still won't copy and paste GIFs.
Google Hangouts interfaces horribly with Contacts, but can work with Gboard and paste pics and GIFS, which Google Voice can't. Google Voice can interface terrifically with Contacts, but has the shortcomings listed below.
The Valentine's Day 2017 update fixed no noticeable problems since the major overhaul of Jan 2017. Fail.
Google Voice's inability to paste GIFS, and Google Hangouts' superior integration with Gmail, led me to switch back to Google Hangouts.
Hoping Google Voice will become fully functional.
