Editors’ Choice

You might get stuck the first time you play Gorogoa. But once the gears of your brain settle into the right configurations, you’ll see how smart this mix of art and perspective really is. Layers pile upon layers, doors transport you between realities, strange creatures and wild environments blend together into a fascinating interactive collage you’ll want to peel apart to discover what lies underneath.

Edited review....

I guess I’m going to be in the minority and not give this game 5 stars. Its definitely different and interesting but as others have stated it felt like more often than not I lucked into solutions which then lead to some cool ahah moments. There were some puzzles that had visual clues to lead me through the progression but those satisfying moments were the exception not the norm for me. Maybe that says more about me than the game :-/ The art is beautiful, the concept cool and when things fell together it was neat to watch, I just wish it didn’t feel so random in terms of getting to the solutions. Clearly a lot of thought and effort went into this app but it didn’t strike me as an experience I really enjoyed as a gaming experience.

So I put the game down for a while and came back to it. I moved it from three stars to four. What I found is that as I progressed I did start learning to understand the visual clues the game was giving me and definitely felt more like I was solving it rather than lucking into solutions. There was still a lot of random clicking to try to find things that would advance the solutions but at least I felt I had direction. It really is a unique experience. I’m not sure it’s a defining moment in gaming for me but that’s more about my taste in games than the quality of Gorogoa.

Can't get this game out of my head

This game is an absolute masterpiece. Seriously, I cannot overstate how much I enjoyed this experience. I have played a lot of amazing games this year, including widely acclaimed games like Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey, but this game has been my favorite for the entire year. Every picture, every sound, and every puzzle is packed to the brim with artistic integrity, something I feel I don't see nearly as often as I did before the indie game market exploded. The story and art reminds me of the books I used to read in my childhood. I am convinced it will take me many more playthroughs to fully realize the interconnectedness of it's beautiful world. My only complaint is with the total length of the game. I wish it never ended. Nevertheless, it is just as enjoyable an experience, if not more, the second and even third time through. Depending on how quickly you are able to navigate through all the different scenes, I would guess you could expect between 2-3 hours of gameplay based on my first time playing through. I recommend this game to absolutely anyone and everyone of all ages. PLAY. THIS. GAME.
