Editors’ Notes

Covering classical composers from the prolific to the obscure, Grammofy is a music-streaming service that speaks to our more cultured sides. But it doesn’t just soothe our souls—each curated collection includes podcast-style introductions to musicians and symphonies that are as entertaining as they are educational. Now we’re just waiting for a fancy party to show off our knowledge of Beethoven, Bach, and the rest of the bunch.

Was Perfect

This wad exactly what I wanted from a classical streaming service: Functional app that had a smooth UI; built around finding new, often obscure works; and music put into context by curators, as opposed to simply putting together playlists. They should have charged more. I would have easily payed 10-15 dollars a month for this. But, alas, I am stuck with Medici, which generally focuses on major works, allowing little room for discovery, and Primephonic, which has a traumatically terrible app and, though a decent selection, generally makes me sad that Grammofy no longer exists.

This is something I really wanted

Pocket Rebel

No, it's not free. But I suddenly realized one day that I was starting to enjoy classical music a lot more than I was. Yes, I was streaming a great station I made on pandora, but I wasn't discovering much that was new. I don't remember how I found this app, but I did my 30 day trial and started a subscription immediately.

There's a lot to love about this app. You can learn quite a bit about the music and the composers by listening to the podcast mode. If you just want the music, you can turn it off.

I love the weekly themes. The curation is often really inspired. Well, it's obviously inspired by the theme, but you know what I mean.

Not every track is a winner, but the selections are often great and flow nicely. If I don't like something, I can skip it. If I like something I can save it so I remember it.
