Gravity Art

This application allows you to explore the Newtonian gravity laws applied in space for a number of galaxies of your choice. You will find that art and physics can be combined to show spectacular results.

A fine selection of music has been prepared to accompany you through the journey in the laws of our physical world.

The algorithm is based on n-body problem. This is the problem of predicting the motion of a group of celestial objects that interact with each other gravitationally. Solving this problem has been motivated by the need to understand the motion of the Sun, planets and the visible stars. Its first complete mathematical formulation appeared in Isaac Newton's Principia (wiki).

Customer Reviews

Wow! So cool and beautiful! :)

I love this kind of generated art and this, with particles making miniature galaxies in 3D, tickles my heart!

It has trails and soft music! It allows you to rotate and pinch zoom in 3D! The only thing that would be nice to add would be a little inertia so that view changes would coast to a gentle stop.

(I'd gladly pay for a fancier version that would allow you to modify starting positions and velocities of the particles, time control, scale control, position, ability to track individual stars, etc. But I realize that would be for a completely different nerd, as opposed to artist, audience. It would also take a LOT more work, as well as a much more complex user interface!).

NCSA (National Center for Supercomputer Administration), the guys who run the big simulations about the evolution of the universe, eat your heart out!

By the way, I'm curious to know if the author is using the iPad's GPU for calculations. It's very fast and smooth! :)
