Hacker News Client

By Marcin Kmiec

Open iTunes to buy and download apps.

Description

This is probably the first Hacker News client on AppStore that uses the newly introduced official Firebase HN API. One of the cool features of the new API are updates pushed in real time. There’s no need to keep refreshing the client, as the number of points and the number of comments for each story are updated automatically. If you wish to reload the stories completely, simply pull to refresh.

With its clean layout, you will definitely love the flat user interface. What's more, you can always adjust the comments' font size by going to iOS's Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Larger Text and dragging the slider.

Hacker News Client is completely open source. Feel free to contribute.

Customer Reviews

Great news, a couple nitpicks with design.

As noted by other reviewers, Hacker News is a great source for intelligent, science-oriented news and discussion. It's made up of wonderfully interesting, often long-form articles and other appealing content, and you need not be a programmer to enjoy it. However, the minimalist design is occasionally annoying. The tiny gray fonts are a bit hard to read, the nested comment system is somewhat clunky (why can't I just expand replies to a comment instead of diving into each individual one?), and there's no way of figuring out how to create an account. I suppose the dev(s) expect that you'll have an account already from the non-mobile form of the site, but I'm new to HN and thus don't, and as such a sign-up feature would be nice. Otherwise, I was impressed by the stability and speed of the built-in browser, which seems to work much better than my Gmail app and even the Dolphin browser, which are both known to crash and hang, while this app's browser seems to do neither. With all that said, I'd certainly recommend trying the app, and I'd give the experience of using it an A-.

Solid HN app from lurker perspective

I'm not a power user so I can't speak to that experience but I do casually browse and this app is perfect for that. If you just lurk like me and just like reading the content and maybe a few comments occasionally, this app is perfect for you.

Threaded comments

Use this app if you only want to read the articles. It is useless if you want to engage with the comments section. There is no option to log into your account, and it lacks a threaded comments view. Instead of seeing all comments in one view, you have to go down rabbit holes and get completely lost.

Very cumbersome to use if you want to enjoy the comments.
