ABOUT THE TRAINING PLAN - NOVICE 1
This Novice 1 Marathon Training Program is designed both for beginning runners who want to prepare for their first 26.2-mile race, but also for experienced runners interested in a fail safe program that will allow them to excel without making excessive demands upon their time.
Novice 1 is designed for newcomers, individuals who have done very little or even no running before. If you are fit enough to finish the Week 1 long run of 6 miles--even if you have to walk the distance--Novice 1 will get you ready to complete a marathon in 18 weeks.
Before starting to train for a marathon, you need to possess a basic fitness level. If you are over age 35, you probably should see your doctor for a physical exam, but assuming no major health problems, most healthy people can train themselves to complete a 26.2-mile race.
The training plan assumes you have the ability to run 3 miles, three to four times a week. If that seems difficult, consider a shorter distance for your first race. You can try our best selling Ease into 5K app which will prepare you to run 3 miles three times a week.

Worth every penny!
After completing couch25k and getting myself up to about 7 miles, I committed to doing a marathon. I used this app from day one and followed it about 95% through. It was the perfect choice for me. Hal is inspiring with his words and always kept me thinking positive when times got tough. He seems to chime in at the right time and kept me going.
Toward the end of the training I had to modify things a little to get ready for the big day. I'll never forget my 20 mile run with the support of my wife and Hal. I got through it fairly easy and was marathon ready. I ran the Philadelphia Marathon in 2011 thanks to this program. I would recommend this app or any Bluefin app to my friends and family.
Got me across the finish line
First and foremost, by following this app I was fully trained and in shape for my first marathon, which I completed with a time I was very happy with. Overall, it did it’s job and I was happy I used it. There were few bugs along the way.
First, the GPS was often inaccurate (which may have been the fault of my phone, I realize), and it would occasionally credit me up to 8/10ths of a mile, depending on how far I ran.
Second. At a certain point during training Hal’s occasional voice over instructions stopped working. Not a huge deal, but it happened.
Those are the main issues I had. Neither was a huge deal and I’d use the app again, but I figured they were worth mentioning. Hope this helps and good luck on your marathon training.
Not for $9.99
I've trained with Hal Higdon programs in the past. I was hoping this would be a very interactive app that incorporated the training program. Wrong. It's a very heavy in-app purchase app that basically for $9.99 provides you with everything you could get for free with a two minute Google search. Although I don't use if for GPS tracking (which entering it manually like I do is another somewhat annoying process), I can see where this may be of some convenience, but not for $9.99.
