What's New

Version 1.8.4

We've significantly improved performance by using less memory. This fixes a crash in Depth Mode, and if you use Halide regularly you'll see it open faster! We've also fixed a bug in image loading, and a few other odds and ends.

Is there a bug still bothering you? Just have some feedback? Email support@halide.cam and we'll look right into it.

HALIDE 1.8: IT’S ABOUT TIME

This big update adds an Apple Watch companion app to remotely preview and take shots, a self-timer, and a completely redesigned photo review that makes it easy to go back in time. We also did a ton of work on accessibility to make our app usable for more people.

APPLE WATCH

You can now use your watch as a remote trigger— with a live preview! Whether you want to be in a group photo or want to avoid camera shake during a long exposure, Halide is now available from your wrist. To use, just open Halide on your phone and then open the Halide Apple Watch app. It's really that easy.

SELF-TIMER

If you don’t have an Apple Watch, use the self-timer to take a photo with a delay. To help with group photos, the LED on the back of your iPhone flashes as it counts down. Look for a timer icon in the Quick Bar as well as the shutter button countdown. Forgot the timer was on? Just tap on the shutter again to cancel.

REDESIGNED REVIEWER

We’re adding a grid-view option in our photo reviewer, similar to the built in photos app. We’ve also changed things so swiping horizontally changes photos. Despite this added view, you can still get back to your camera with a swipe; just swipe down to get back to the viewfinder instantly. Finally, we’ve sped things up for users with gigantic libraries.

ACCESSIBILITY

We care a lot about accessibility, and in previous updates we already did a lot to make Halide more usable to everyone. This update is our biggest accessibility push yet, with support for Dynamic Type, VoiceOver improvements and much more. Our camera, photo reviewer, and settings reflect the font size you’ve set in iOS Settings. We’ve also improved how things look when “bold text” is enabled in system settings. As always, this update includes small UI improvements (we keep polishing this gem!) and bug fixes.

If you love Halide, be sure to rate us! We don’t prompt for reviews, so every bit helps, and good reviews really help us a ton.

Til next time!

Not impressed so far

round midnight

The app crashed while testing the 3D Depth feature. Then the UI became unstable and the camera shutter sound played when i wasn’t even taking a picture. The UI is fairly good, but I’m not blown away as the hype around this app suggested. The semi-transparent tap circles around buttons I find frankly a bit ugly and amateurish looking.

As for the features, I use format framing modes like square extensively, and I was shocked that a pro camera app would lack framing options. This is something I really want to see added. The seeming lack of long exposure photos is also a big negative for an app designed around manual controls—this was an important tool for me in the analog film days.

I do think I’d use this app if photo framing modes were added, but until then it’s just not giving me what I need at a basic level. I understand the designer’s desire to simplify, but as an ex-Apple designer he should know that Apple-esque elegance isn’t just removing features, but providing streamlined common features on top while letting users drill down for more complex options. Though I’d consider taking a square format photo (which came from medium format film cameras, not Instagram) a basic and necessary option for the top level.

Sorry to hear about your crash! We treat crashes seriously, so if you email support@halide.cam, we'll be glad to dig in.

As for long exposure, the iPhone can only native support exposures up to 1/3 a second. If you see anything longer, it's a post-processing effect that blends together multiple images. It would be impossible to support that kind of effect while supporting RAW; we haven't ruled that out in the future, but we usually avoid any post processing effects.

As for framing modes, we're definitely considering it in the future, but isn't a top priority right now.

A fantastic camera for the iPhone

The One True Dude

Halide is a fantastic camera for your iPhone. It is well designed and build to take advantage of every possible feature. I’ve used Halide with both an iPhone 6 and and iPhone X. Even on my iPhone 6 Halide helped me feel more like I was using my traditional camera with interchangeable lenses. Focusing and exposure on shots is easy to control if you want to.

On my iPhone X Halide sings. The RAW capture capability. The intuitive controls still work great, and the work the team put into supporting the iPhone X shows and makes it worth every penny. The inventive uses of the new screen are welcomed additions. I love using Halide for most of my shooting now because it is so easy to point and shoot in Auto or you can switch to manual and tune as you feel it needs. Just today I found the guide with haptics for lining up a level shot from above to be invaluable. I can’t wait to only take my iPhone X and Halide with me on my next trip and still be able to capture great photos.

Hands down the best

If it weren’t for the article I read on medium I wouldn’t have stumbled upon this app hearing about its journey in design to truly be tailored to this new iPhone X is what not only sparked my interest but it’s what made me willing to spend the money on it. It was no longer a random app on the AppStore. I had insight on its origins and an understanding of the detail put into place for it.

As far as my usage goes I love it. It brings powerful features and a one handed UI to the iPhone X. Every interaction seems to have been thought of and much like the X you have to familiarize yourself with the gestures and icons. There are however a few bugs with the app one of them being landscape mode. Yes it orients the photo correctly but the UI does not shift. I’m sure this will be and can be fixed in a future update. But for now this is the best app to take advantage off both the camera technology in the iPhone X and it’s design. Bravo, 5 stars.
