What's New

Version 1.6.0

Our latest update is about speed. We’ve added shortcuts, snap photos faster, and taken the guesswork out of files and formats to make you more efficient. Let’s dive in!

By popular demand, we’ve added a lock screen widget to launch Halide with one tap. We’ve added 3D shortcuts to launch the app in either Manual or Auto mode.

Everything feels a lot more responsive, as we’ve cut down the time between hitting the capture button and the new photo appearing. Now you immediately know when you’ve captured the perfect shot.

When you open a RAW image in an app that can’t read RAW, the image looks blurry. We can’t fix those apps, but we’re improving the situation. Apps that aren’t compatible will now fall-back to a processed image we save alongside your RAW. You can turn this off within Advanced Settings.

After a day full of shooting, we know it’s annoying to sort through your camera roll to find the favorite photos you want to edit. To speed things up, RAW photos are now added to a “RAW” album in your camera roll.

By popular demand, we’ve added a few advanced format options within Settings. If you’re worried about compatibility with HEIC, switch from “Most Efficient” to “Most Compatible” and Halide will use JPEG.

In situations where Halide can’t shoot RAW, we offer MAX mode, which saves a HEIC or JPEG in the highest quality setting. We now also have TIFF! It’s lossless, but uses 3x the storage.

Halide is the first manual camera app to support VoiceOver, Apple’s assistive technology for the visually impaired. If you or anyone you know relies on VoiceOver, we’d appreciate your feedback, and we’d love to hear how you’re using the app. Please email us at support@halide.cam.

We've fine-tuned the placement of controls on iPhone X, to improve thumb access. You probably can't see it, but it makes a big difference.

If you enjoy Halide, consider leaving a review. We don’t prompt for reviews in the app, so every little bit helps. If you have any issues or questions, just email support@halide.cam and we’ll get right on it. Thanks for your support!

Hands down the best

If it weren’t for the article I read on medium I wouldn’t have stumbled upon this app hearing about its journey in design to truly be tailored to this new iPhone X is what not only sparked my interest but it’s what made me willing to spend the money on it. It was no longer a random app on the AppStore. I had insight on its origins and an understanding of the detail put into place for it.

As far as my usage goes I love it. It brings powerful features and a one handed UI to the iPhone X. Every interaction seems to have been thought of and much like the X you have to familiarize yourself with the gestures and icons. There are however a few bugs with the app one of them being landscape mode. Yes it orients the photo correctly but the UI does not shift. I’m sure this will be and can be fixed in a future update. But for now this is the best app to take advantage off both the camera technology in the iPhone X and it’s design. Bravo, 5 stars.

We're so glad you stumbled upon our lil' app via Medium! Thanks so much for the kind words! – Sebastiaan

Definitely the best camera app out there

Love the app and the thoughtful gesture based approach to adjustments. A couple of suggestions that would make this even more awesome. In landscape mode the slide up to adjust exposure compensation doesn’t work. Instead it took me a while to figure out that the gesture has to go left to right. The last image thumbnail from the camera roll is seriously distracting from the rest of the beautiful interface and also when I want to only ‘see’ the scene in front of me. Maybe a button to access my roll would be better. I don’t know about others but my thumb naturally sits at either corners of the screen irrespective of orientation or which hand I use (I am ambidextrous:) would be cool to allow customizing placement of the shutter release button like we can customize the quick bar. Just my wishful thinking!

One Question

The app design itself is great, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to use portrait mode in this app. I click on depth but it does not enable the artificial blur.

UPDATE: Thanks for the response, I watched the tutorial and I totally understand how the depth feature works now. I see that you have apply it afterwards in the photos app.

It's a shame though that there is no live preview of the depth like the stock camera app though. It's like blindly taking a picture, and then you just have to hope it came out OK. Can you please make it so I can see the blur effect live on my screen in the app? Camera+ has this ability already but I really like Halide a lot more except for this one issue.
