Love it but...
I love this app! For the last few years, I've been trying to motivate myself to write my fiction novel. I'm always writing academic papers, essays, books, etc., but it's always like pulling teeth. Since my first typing experiences were with a typewriter (I took a typing class in high school), I find that the typing sound motivates me to write. I was looking for a typewriter, but do not have an adequate set up for it and a typewriter is hardly portable - even though there are portable typewriters.
After downloading this app, the soothing sound of the typewriter seems to make the ideas flow easily. Writing is no longer like pulling teeth. Because the world processing is limited, I get all my ideas out with this app, export the document, and edit using Pages or (on my laptop) Scrivner.
Having said all that, here's the downfall. I can't use the onscreen keyboard and always carry a portable keyboard when I go out to my local coffee shop to write. This app has a problem with outside keyboards because it crashes after typing out a few paragraphs. Please fix this problems. Now that the ideas are flowing, it'll be a shame if something as minor as a crashing app slows me down.
Awesome - but with issues
After using the app for quite a bit of time now, I can say that I still very much enjoy it for its simplicity. However, whenever using a Bluetooth keyboard with the app, it consistently crashes unless I type as slow as possible. Please fix.
This app is not to be considered as a replacement for a regular word processing app, but is still delightful to use for its nostalgia factor or even to just have a different "feel" when typing. Just as you compose text differently when writing long hand than you would when using a modern word processing program, this app can make you think a little differently about what you are writing. You fall into the rhythm of the keys and the ideas begin to flow (at least for me). My only suggestions for improvement would be the inclusion of tab stops (perhaps in the form of preset page margins that can be selected) and enhancing the animation by animating the ribbon. I think it would be a nice graphical element to have the ribbon behave a little more like it would on a real typewriter, with the letters appearing and scrolling away as you type. Totally not functional, but something I would love to watch - just as I loved to watch it back in the day.
Liked it in the beginning, no I see nothing but problems.
Okay. First off, this is a wonderful emulator of a typewriter. It makes the sounds as you type. Demands you to press back space for every letter and space. And with a little extra cash, gives you two more options for your ideal typewriter. Each typewriter has it's own sound effects and ink style that add to the authenticity. You can even change typewriters while you are typing as a creative way to highlight or add style to certain words. After saying that, it frustrates me to list it's short comings. First, it has not been optimized for ipad pro yet, so say goodbye to the perfect keyboard while using the app on that device. Second, forget using a bluetooth keyboard to work around the separated keys on the app. Using one will cause the app to crash, especially when deleting errors. And lastly there is no way to organize the files once they are made. Making locating a specific one harder and harder the more you add to the app. Sigh. Overall I recommend a different app for serious writers. The chore of switching between key boards to add a simple apostrophe or question mark is just the little bit frustrating I don't need to break my flow.
