Haunted Past: Realm of Ghosts reviewed by Lynxminx
This was overall a good game. The graphics were good, although of course I preferred the ghost realm, because it was absolutely gorgeous! It had a journal, which is always helpful. There were your requisite HO scenes; no surprises there. They had puzzles, but they weren't as good as in other games, and they weren't as plentiful. The only true mini- game was with the glyphs. Of course there was a hint system, strategy guide and bonus chapter. What was very interesting was that you picked up objects in one realm, had to hide them and then use them in the other realm. At least that was different from other HO games! Another great aspect was that an area said it was cleared so you didn't have to waste time looking there! It had an interesting story as well.
I would have liked the game to be a little bit longer. It also had no map, teleporting or otherwise. However, it wasn't too difficult to find locations. Unless of course you're very stupid! I guess we are getting spoiled with the teleporting maps, which I agree should be part of every game! However, THERE WERE NO RATS ANYWHERE AND I WAS VERY PLEASANTLY SURPRISED! I only took one star off for length and no map.
I would buy the sequel if you give us a longer game, a teleporting map and a lot more puzzles! ALSO, NO RATS! That goes without saying! Well I am off to finally play the 3rd Empress!
Boring and repetitive
Unlike some of the other reviewers I was unimpressed with this game. The mini games were ridiculously simple even without any instructions.
Because the game had you work only a few rooms at a time until they were all cleared the game was much too linear, which increased the boredom factor.
Although time travel can be used to good effect, this game did not do anything interesting with it. I found the idea of hiding items so they could be found by me in the future to be laughable.
I also get extremely irritated when a game like this forces me to use a particular inventory item to solve a problem when I have others that would solve the problem even better. I can't use my flaming torch to melt ice, really?
There were also several times that I had the inventory item I needed but it didn't occur to me to use it in the way the game wanted. An example is using a magnifying glass to create light in the dead of night.
The good things about it are that the inventory items are labeled and the game didn't crash or otherwise misbehave. The strategy guide was adequate.
Good for newbies
The game is actually great for someone who is new to playing these type of games.
For me, I found the game incredibly easy, and disappointing.
There's not much skill involved, not a lot of backtracking to other rooms, you almost clear each room one by one like a level.
It's not a bad game, it's just not challenging at all. I like games that make me have to think, and the puzzles in this our child's play.
I played some other fantastic big fish games, this one was incredibly not on par with the difficulty level of some of their other games. Even the soundtrack was looped over and over, instead of investing time in a unique soundtrack. For the price, I wish I had never bought it.
I finished it in 2 hours. There are many other games out there that have better soundtracks, better graphics, a better storyline, and are actually a challenge. And they are cheaper.
If you are new to these types of games, it's a great starter!
