"Watching the chapters in the dark with headphones on and my face a few inches away from a small screen reminded me of reading ghost stories while sitting alone in my house late at night." –
"Haunting Melissa is a scarily playful, thoroughly modern experiment with the media through which horror stories are delivered." - Co.Create/Fast Company
"A unique app-only video series that can scare you on Halloween...and beyond" - SF Gate

What's New in Version 2.100
First off: sorry, but the acting is deplorable. Watched the first chapter twice (because they've made it so certain small things are changed on repeat viewings) and it was a real chore. Both "actresses" sounded as if they were reading off cue cards, and all the dialogue was clunky and unnatural. Oh, and it's in the "found footage" style which has been the godsend of pretty much every amateur filmmaker who's able buy a camera, but not have any budget (or talent) beyond that.
After each chapter, you have to wait an unknown period of time for the next to be unlocked. Chapter 2 was unlocked and I started to watch it to see if it might get any better. After about 1 minute, I had to put the phone down. Upon returning, Chapter 2 looked to still be unlocked, but when I tried to play it, I was told I could purchase it... or a season pass.
What?! How was I able to watch it earlier & now I have to pay? On top of that, it doesn't tell you what an episode costs. If you click on "purchase episode," the phone asks you to confirm you want to make the purchase but still doesn't tell you the price! It'll be a cold day in Hades when I make an App Store purchase without actually knowing what the price is!
Time goes by so slowly
It's great in theory, but lacking in execution. It's less interactive than I was anticipating, but it's still interesting to just watch things unfold. My biggest gripe is that it takes so long to wait for some chapters to be released that I've grown tired of waiting and found that I've lost interest. Although things may change with each view, they are so subtle that it makes me question if I really want to watch the scene over and over again. There's a difference between anticipation and just being left in the dark listening to the crickets chirping. I've grown tired of waiting. Frankly, I could care less if the ghosts and goblins terrorize Melissa. By the time the next chapter is released,no wont remember the previous chapters anyhow.
Click your way through a B horror movie
As a caveat, I became so bored with this "game" that I stopped halfway through and uninstalled. It's possible that the quality vastly improved in the second half, although other reviews lead me to believe that's not the case. I was initially intrigued by the concept of Haunting Melissa, which I thought was something like a "choose your own adventure" horror game leveraging film as a medium. Unfortunately, this was nothing more than a mediocre paranormal-genre movie, distributed in installments. Although you click on doors, objects, people, etc. to progress the plot, that device is really nothing more than an enhanced forward button. Haunting Melissa is more appropriate subject matter for an iMDB review than as an iPad game (and the iMDB reviews, which do exist, are no more glowing than this).
