Limited to its own products
The app does a great job importing weights from the Withings scale. But that's about it. I know, they're trying to sell their own stuff, but come on. It tracks steps for me... But only steps taken with my iPhone. It ignores steps taken with other products, just fitbit or apple watch. So, it tells me I'm constantly falling short of my 10k step goal because I only get a few hundred with my phone in my pocket. Ignores the run I did in the morning, or walking the dog in the afternoon, because even though those steps were tracked and imported into health kit, Withings ignores them.
So, I'll continue to use the app to move weight data from my scale to health kit, and I'll use a different app altogether to actually keep track of my health and recommend improvements. If I could get my weight data into health kit without this app, I would do so in a heartbeat. But I don't want to waste more money on another scale by another company.
This app is terrible
This whole app, device, and cloud ecosystem is terrible. I am hoping that most of my complaints are setup issues and that daily use is smoother.
I installed the app strictly to configure a Withings Body scal. If I wasn't a software engineer who has worked in the IoT space, I don't think I could have setup the scale. Both the app and the scale timed out repeatedly while trying to establish bluetooth and then again while I created the mandatory Withings account. Knowing how device setup was supposed to work seemed necessary, and it should be simpler.
Many of the app's screens do not update to reflect setting changes just made in the app, like new users and new weight measurements. (The same is true of the website.) Body composition measurements seem flakey, in that they do not always happen. I hope that the system works better in a steady state.
Latest version does not reliably track steps
I am using this app on an iPhone 5 — the one before the special trip that tracks motion — updated two most recent version of the app, and the step tracker is all but useless unless I consciously launch the app and watch to see that it is tracking steps.
(Idling previous versions, I would need to stop and restart the app to nudge the app so it would, in fac,t track steps. But this is now much worse than before.)
Even when I do a fresh stop and restart, the app does not reliably track track my steps. Standard walks that I took in the past do not register the same number of steps with this version. Also, I have my iPhone with me, but now have entire days with zero steps. Really!?
