Every frequency range has a colour, a quality, a character. For sound engineers, musicians, and other enthusiasts, knowing how to apply this to an equalizer (EQ) can make a transformational change to your sound—whether you're mixing a live concert, a recording, or even playing music through iTunes. BEST OF: Named one of the "The best iPhone and iPad apps for musicians" by AppPicker, www.apppicker.com
REVIEW: “After half an hour with the app I had a noticeable improvement to my score, but I was also thinking in much clearer terms too!” -Tim Webb, www.discchord.com
REVIEW: "hearEQ…makes the experience of ear training enjoyable enough to seem like fun. [It's] a great educational tool and well worth its almost negligible price." -Tom Flint, Sound on Sound: The World's Best Recording Technology Magazine, July 2014
REVIEW: “The principle behind hearEQ is beautifully straightforward…even with a little repetition, things do start to improve and I suspect if you were to build some hearEQ into your daily musical routine, you would soon reap some positive benefits.” -John Walden, www.musicappblog.com
TESTIMONIAL: “This handy app is one of the greatest tools I've seen for helping you hear exactly how EQ adjustments affect your sound. Wish I would have had this when I was first learning how to mix live sound.” - James Wasem, www.greatchurchsound.com
It's a simple app with a powerful promise: if you learn the qualities of each frequency band—for example, cutting 4kHz puts sound in the background—then you can make equalization work for you, and truly transform your sound into something professional and beautiful.
hearEQ uses your favourite songs to create custom ear training exercises that a) teach you all about frequency bands, and b) help you really hone your EQ skills. A standard 10-band equalizer is used, just like you'd find in iTunes and on many professional sound mixers. Your song will be played back with a simple equalization applied—and you guess what it was!
> Was it really clear, maybe a bit hollow? Could be a 1000 Hz cut.
> Was it muddy? Maybe that's a 500 Hz boost.
> Was it really present, almost too in-your-face? Sounds like a 4kHz boost.
Ten questions, ten frequencies, and then you get a score. Want to focus on just a few frequency bands to start? You can do that too. Keep at it, and you'll be an EQ master in no time.

What's New in Version 1.2.0
New “sliding” learn page, two new user-requested add-ons, and various performance enhancements.
LEARN PAGE. A decibel (dB) is a measure of loudness, so the greater the dB, the greater the EQ effect. Experiment with different dB levels on our brand new LEARN PAGE! Just slide your finger up and down on each frequency, and you'll hear the filter come in and out.
ADD-ONs. We’ve been getting some excellent feedback from our users, and have acted on that feedback by integrating two new add-ons:
> Want to train your ears just like the experts? "Pink noise" is a special type of sound used for ear-training, and this add-on integrates seamlessly with hearEQ.
> Once you’ve mastered hearEQ’s normal exercises, grab the "Advanced EQ" add-on to hone your EQ skills with lower-dB filters.
As always, we love to hear your feedback, so drop us an email at email@example.com (or tweet at @tenkettles) to share your comments, suggestions, and feedback. Like what we’re doing? Pop a review up on the AppStore. :)
Well designed, simple, effective app
This is a great little ear training app for learning how to listen critically to EQ adjustments. I bought both the pink noise add-on and the advanced mode add-on. I'm finding it really helpful to train my ears on pink noise, then practice on musical material. The developer apparently welcomes user feedback and has made improvements based on user suggestions, which is always a plus in my book. Well worth the price!
Wonderfull little trainer. Plays like a game with my favorite music but quickly trains my hearing. I run sound at church and my home studio but have had no formal training so had a lot of room for improvement. Instant help in identifying problem frequencies.
Even better than before
Great update, both the pink noise and the variable EQ levels! This has now become a very capable ear training tool. I wish I could have had something like this years ago.
