Pay to win? No.

People can see this as a pay to win game, but it’s not. All you need is some good old fashioned patience. Y’know, like the old days. Their design allows players who intend to pay nothing to play in many modes that fully utilize the cards it starts with and it feel clean balanced and super fun. I’ve been playing since April 2017 and payed nothing and gotten above rank 10 many times. The game gives card packs away like candy so your collection grows substantially, giving you tons of great decks. Plus, you can break down extra cards for Dust which can be used to make your cards you don’t have for that deck you want. This is the perfect example of a game that enables players to spend nothing and have a hell of a time. I spent 50 dollars on the last expansion, not because I wanted to win, but because I felt that I got so much fun out of this game that I wanted to support Blizzard and their team for making such a great game. 50 bucks for a great game sounds fair to me.

Honestly the Best Game Ever....So Far

I have been playing Hearthstone for years now. I may get distracted by other games for a week or a month here and there but I always come back to Hearthstone.
Let’s be honest here, though. If you want to play competitively, you kind of do have to pay for some packs of cards or a single player campaign to get key cards. That may sound bad to a lot of people. However, as a gamer I have resigned myself to accepting the fact that I pay money for entertainment on a fairly regular basis. After playing Hearthstone and paying money here and there over the last couple years, I have actually come to see the money spent as a relatively good investment. I still use the cards I paid for two years ago (Alexstraza, Cairne Bloodhoof, Ysera, Archmage Antonidas, Etc). You cannot say the same for paid expansion content in any other game out there, on any platform.

Simple to learn, hard to master

Overall a great game! And the heart of hearthstone are some very simple gameplay mechanics, which makes it a very easy cardgame to learn. Nevertheless due to the large number of cards and ever evolving meta-game, hearthstone is not easy to master, which is what makes it so appealing. Personally I’ve put countless hours into the game. I’ve been playing it on-and-off for about a year and still haven’t grown tired of it.

My only complaint would be that there’s a bit of a barrier to entry for a new player who’s looking to only play for free. If you want a good range of cards and don’t want to pay for them, then you need to put a lot of hours into the game. It’s easy to gradually do so, just by playing 1-2hrs a week over the course of 5-6 months, but this could appear daunting for the new player.
