Ratings and Reviews
Really great and creepy game!
I think what makes this game as good as it is is the way it pulls you into the world and connects you to the characters in a way that isn't common in horror. It's adorable and terrifying at the same time, and that's a hard combination to pull off.
As some people have mentioned, the art is not great and the translation could be better, but it is worth taking into account that this is the first episode in a games series which started off as an indie project. As I understand it, Ryukishi07 did all of the drawings himself and also photographed the backgrounds, so this was pretty much a homegrown project. The fact that it has since been adapted into anime and manga and other mediums, with professional art and voice acting and the like, purely on the momentum of its popularity, I think is a pretty strong testimony to its quality.
If you ask me, kids today are rather spoiled by all of these beautifully rendered 3D games produced on budgets comparable to those of feature films. Gaming was an activity that required a lot more imagination back in the day.
Great app, but a few little problems
Great storyline, characters are fun. I have a few complaints, though. The first time i tried it, i made it all the way through the first stage, then left the app without saving and discovered it didn't have multitasking. Also, there is no autosave slot, so i had to go through the first stage all over again. I think there should really be an auto save slot, that would make things a lot easier. Also, scene selection for the scenes i've already unlocked would be great, and there are some grammar/spelling errors. Other than that, i have no problems.
Also, a warning-this story can be creepy, so i'd advise against watching it at night in the dark before you go to sleep.
Don't have any money on my itunes account, but i want to see what happens next!
I first thought this was a game and was a little dissapointed when I found out it was a visual novel, but nonetheless it's and intriguing story filled with memorable characters, suspense, mystery, and horror. The way the story writer(s) went about telling the story was perfect. This was unique and engaging, something that so many stories nowadays lack. The music was fairly good as well, and the sound effects they had were great, though they could've had a few more. The art style was neat as well, combining that anime and cartoon look. I intend on buying every Higurashi sound novel that comes out now, and I hope there are many more to come.
