The Wikipedia of Hiking Trails
I love the hiking project app for planning my trips. It has overview descriptions, photos, and GPSed trails. One of my favorite aspects of this app is that it is free and the material crowdsourced making it like a Wikipedia for hiking trails. All submissions are vetted by a small staff so the posted trails are of good quality.
The only downside is that there are still thousands of unmapped trails, but that list gets smaller with each new trail added, and the app is updated regularly. If your looking for a day hike or weekend adventure you should be able to find a new gem within reasonable distance of where you are.
Great when it works, frustrating when it didn't
Great resource, but in the backcountry with limited service the app is VERY laggy and takes a long time to load maps. I thought that when you download an area, that would include both the trails and the maps, but it only seems to include the trails. The app should allow you to download everything so you're not reliant on good cell service.
I find this app difficult to use. For example, I have several paragraphs of notes for a trail (Flag Mountain Trail in Mt Hood NF) I do every day when I'm in the area but I'm frustrated in trying to add my notes to the existing brief and summary listing or even rating it. I haven't a clue as to why I can't make the app work but expect to delete it shortly if I can't grok it.
