Hippo Hooray Colors - Flashcards for Toddlers

Created by parents for their own children (and tested extensively with those very same kids), Hippo Hooray Colors is a great way to help young children learn their colors as well as keep them entertained. From the makers of Hippo Hooray Letters and Hippo Hooray Shapes, Hippo Hooray Colors displays a rich variety of colors on balloons, cupcakes, coins, and leaves. A young voice encourages your child to choose the right colored object, helps them if they don't pick right the first time, and pats them on the back when they choose correctly. There's even a line of text for grownups to use to help guide their toddler and to help in noisy environments. Every so often a short video will pop up congratulating your child on doing a great job. Rather than a quiz format, each screen is like a little teaser for your toddler to learn from.

Amid beautiful illustrations, you'll find Honey the Hippo and Raphael the Robin (yes, he paints!) peeking out from behind scenery, and coming out to encourage your child. (Keep an eye out for the monkey with the cupcake hat.) In addition to high quality artwork, the user interface is incredibly simple letting your toddler focus on cognitive, language, and motor development.

Customer Reviews

This app is great for toddlers because they not only have fun while playing, but they also get to learn and practice their colors without being aware of it. Hippo Hooray weaves cute, lovable characters, adorable phrases, and clever artwork into a game that would have been otherwise wonderful even without any of these attributions. Overall, I think this is a great children's app and is without a doubt worth every cent.

I wish u could test the apps for like 5 min. It's ok but it verbally asks for the different color first, which my 2 yr old doesn't quite get. Then it asks for the red xxxx. But when she gets it or doesn't, it doesn't really do much. Like if she hits the right color, it should light up and go crazy saying "red red" and reinforcing the name. If she hits the wrong color it just falls away and says "touch red" again. I think it should say "no sorry" first. When she hits red, it say good job. That's it. Not too bad but my girl doesn't know "different color" which is 50% of the puzzles. Stick with asking color names.

Could be improved

While the app is visually appealing, I agree with other reviewers that it's not very helpful for my toddler because it doesn't say any color names. Other flashcard-type apps we've tried would ask for a certain shape, then say, "No, that's (other shape). Find (shape)." This app only says "Touch (color)" and is not helping my toddler remember any of the colors. Also, at 21 months he doesn't quite understand "different color" as in, "3 of these are the same color, which one is not the same?" Finally, the sound clips for when the right color is chosen are unenthusiastic at best, and specifically "You rock" sounds like "You're wrong." The app has a lot of flaws! Skip this and try a different flashcard app.
