Incredibly disappointing

After purchasing a new Honda Hr-v I discovered how limited the Hondalink connect system is. When test driving a car I don't normally play with the radio. Had I known the limitations with this I wouldn't have purchased a Honda.

Aside from having to purchase an adapter so I could then pay Honda more money, to use what should be an included navigation app. The majority of the time I have to spend ten min restarting as well as plugging and unplugging my phone. 9/10 times my phone isn't recognized until after I launch the Hondalink app. Even if I'm just playing the radio.

When I use the navigation app I have to keep my phone unlocked otherwise the navigation app shuts off. This is especially annoying if you are the passenger who's phone is hooked up. It renders your phone useless.

I want to be able to use apply Carplay, Waze and Google maps. I don't like that in order to get the "full" experience I need to purchase sub par apps when the free ones are much better.

If you're thinking about purchasing a Honda and have an iPhone. Make sure they have incorporated apple Carplay because they aren't going to add it to models that don't currently have it. Very disappointing Honda.

Huge piece of frustrating garbage

On the off chance you get to to work it seems helpful. But I've only had it work 1 time in the 6 months I owned my car. It does not send directions. It does not connect. I've tried Bluetooth wifi USB. I've restored my phone, open and closed the app, reinstalled, deleted my Bluetooth connection, tried with my wife's phone setup a wireless network with my phone and only 1 time has it ever worked. Randomly weeks later it will push the address I wanted seemingly random. Their tutorials and FAQs are worthless as they don't help when it doesn't work. No troubleshooting guide. Only plus is the app was free. Truck was over 40 thousand so a simple app that can sync an address must only be available on 50 thousand dollar cars.

Maybe my expectations are just lower

Is this app the best of the App Store? No. Will it ever be showcased at WWDC? Absolutely not. It's entirely unambitious, and probably intended primarily to be a "wow factor" sales tool for Honda dealers.

But it does what it says it does (which is admittedly not much). It enables me to use the HondaLink app in my 2017 Accord, which tells the weather and shows recall and other information posted by Honda. Not bad! Is it the best possible implementation? No. But it works!

Essentially, this app is a conduit that allows the car to connect to the Internet when my phone is in the car. Mine works over Bluetooth. I understand that some older cars, like my wife's 2015 CR-V, required a "cable connection kit" with an HDMI cable and stuff, but my car does not; Bluetooth is sufficient. It also enables me to use the car's built-in "Aha" app for music, which is objectively terrible. But who cares about "Aha" when the car also has CarPlay, SiriusXM and Pandora?

The app is fine. Download it, just don't expect more out of it than what it is.
