Hooktheory II builds on the foundation of Roman numeral analysis, chord function, and melodic construction taught in Hooktheory I, giving you deeper insight into composing richer, more sophisticated music.

Hooktheory II is an intuitive, interactive journey that teaches you how to use seventh chords, embellishments, secondary chords, minor harmony, modes, and modal mixture to expand and enrich your songwriting. With 83 interactive exercises and 228 audiovisual examples, Hooktheory II is exactly what you need to take your chords and melodies to the next level.

Hooktheory I and Hooktheory II were created to teach you how to craft melodies and chord progressions like professional musicians, and gain a deeper understanding and intuition for how music works.

Hooktheory I introduced you to Roman numerals and scale degrees, and laid the groundwork for arranging chords and melody into something that sounds great. But Hooktheory I really only scratched the surface of what is musically possible.

Hooktheory II begins right where Hooktheory I left off. You'll learn about seventh chords, embellishments, secondary chords, minor harmony, modes, modal mixture, and more; and you'll do so with the same fun, easy to understand approach we used in Hooktheory I, with its emphasis on practical usage demonstrated with rich examples from real songs.

Reading Hooktheory II doesn’t require the ability to read music or any music knowledge outside what was covered in Hooktheory I. On average, it takes about twelve hours to read (but more to fully absorb) so it isn't a huge time commitment.

We wrote Hooktheory I and II because we were tired of all of the “songwriting” websites and books that talk vaguely of “finding your inspiration” rather than providing concrete tools to improve your music.

With Hooktheory I and II, we have created an approachable, intuitive resource that directly answers the hard questions: Why do certain chords fit together easily, and others not so easily? How can I get from this chord to that chord? How can I create a great melody? Hooktheory II is a book that will make you say “ah ha!” many times over.

Exactly what i’ve been looking for!

I’ve been getting into song analysis as a means of becoming a better songwriter and wishing I had a resource that blends theory and practice. Hooktheory delivers all this and more. Love it!

Best way to learn theory

I loved this book. I feel like I understand how to use chords now, and how to identify what techniques songwriters are using in the songs I learn. I recommend this and hooktheory 1 to anybody who wants a better knowledge of music theory that isn't so dry like a book.

Amazing music theory teacher!

While not formally trained in music theory, I’ve been a self-taught student for much of my adult life. Many of the more advanced and abstract concepts have always escaped practicality - until now. Advanced ideas are spelled out in easy to understand ways, but most importantly, the many examples throughout the book demonstrate how to use these tools in a way that makes sense. Bravo! Along with a fantastic writing tool (HookPad) you have made what once seemed complex and out of reach accessible and usable. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Hope you continue to put out more products and fine tune your HookPad. Nicely done! 😎👍
