Ratings and Reviews
I've used Hoopla on many e-books and audibles for well over a year and never had any real problems until I started reading books in a couple of series. The first series book went fine but in the second, some of the pages had black "blocks" on them or some scattered black "pixels." Then pages wouldn't turn. If I closed/relaunched the app, sometimes it would "resume" to my last page and sometime it wouldn't. I've deleted/relaunched the app from the App Store over TWO dozen times and I can't get back to my last page. If I choose "chapter 18" from the index, it asks me if I want to open it, but nothing happens. Twice after reinstalling I have turned individual pages one at a time, trying to get back to chapter 18, but it's stopped at ch 13 and again, the page won't turn either way - my iPad is frozen on that page. My software's uptodate and now I'm wracking my brain, wondering if it might be something in these particular series of books - I'm so frustrated over these problems and the amount of time I've wasted trying to finish these books, I'm halfway ready to just say to hell with it and deal with the lingering frustrating curiosity over the missing chapters and endings of the books I can't read! Grrrr. Not happy.
Love this app! But would also love a few updates
I love hoopla and use it almost every day. Mostly I listen to audiobooks while I'm working, either at home or at my job. It's a great concept with lots of content and I love that it's free through the library! Very convenient to be able to download content straight to your phone. THANK YOU for adding lock screen cover art in the latest update, looks so much better. There are a couple other things that I think could be improved though.
I would love it if there was some way to make LISTS instead of just favorite items. I would like to be able to make a list of books I want to listen to, or movies I want to see, or favorite books in a certain genre, etc. Right now my list of favorites is a mixture of books I have previously borrowed and liked, and books that I have never listened to and want to remember for the future. It gets confusing sometimes.
It would also be really nice to be able to listen to a short sample, even just a minute or less, before you actually commit to borrowing it, especially because with audiobooks there are often several versions of the same book read by different narrators, and having a good narrator can really make or break the listening experience.
While on the whole, hoopla is a nice app to have, to easily borrow books from your library, constant glitches make it frustrating to use. Consistently it zonks out-after a couple of pages and especially after the end of a chapter, the app just stops. One has to click done, go back to menu and reopen the book. Updating the app has not helped. I am also not a fan of the 10 books per month limit. I prefer the “five books at a time” limits posed by other digital reader apps like Overdrive and Axis 360.
Update: Borrowing e-books and videos is easy. But videos have an extremely short check out time. On the negative side, the book selection tends to be too heavily leaning on the romance/family genre, and most bestselling authors will not be found here. I had previously given this app three stars, but the glitches have become too annoying to use the app. You have to read the book in portrait mode. Landscape is not available. The page will not reorient itself nor can you set it in one mode over another. They updated the app to give you a page turning experience, but after once or twice, you will not be able to proceed to another page. You will need to shut down the app and restart it. Additionally, it will also shut down on its own while you are reading. There are many readers on the market now. I find overdrive and cloud work best with my library. Hoopla—give it a miss.
Hello VS Raine,
We do plan on releasing landscape mode in the near future. For the rest of your concerns, would you mind contacting us at firstname.lastname@example.org? Hopefully we can better troubleshoot the issues you are experiencing.
