So far, useless
Started a watch for a Christmas trip back in September. Bought the tickets in September (not from Hopper, found them $100 cheaper elsewhere) based on our own previous experiences despite Hopper saying to wait and that the prices would drop. I kept the watch on because I was intrigued to see if there was some trend I was missing. Is there some kind of Black Friday sale? Last minute tickets? A certain day to buy in the week? Every notification said to wait despite the prices steadily climbing. 6 days from our flight, I got the notification to buy and that it was the best prices. It was 60% higher than when I started the watch back in September! Either they're price gouging, or this app is pretty much useless. Hubby and I fly at least 2-3 times per year for the past 6 years. The same rings true: "buy early". I'd give it one more chance
Two days after writing this review, I received another notification to buy my tickets (for the same trip) only now it was $300 cheaper than when I was prompted to buy the first time. Yet when I originally bought the tickets, my price was still $400 cheaper even after the extra $300 they took off. Yikes. I'm glad everyone else is receiving better experiences than me.
Great and Not So Great
It is a simplistic way to check flight costs and speculate on how much the cost might rise/drop at future dates. However, it is ROUGHLY 50-50 at providing a recommendation to buy before the price changes. So a couple of minor(?) changes might help. For example, it should scan past prices for the lowest/most frequent lowest price for a trip and use that as a benchmark for the customer--and explain that price in a specific/explicit statement. Knowing that should improve the recommendation when-to-buy. It appears that the algorithm may do that already...It so, then it should give %time for several low-prices. Basically, whatever algorithm they are using should be their focus on continually improving the buy-prediction accuracy. This could be an extremely valuable tool. In addition, they should provide a way for the customer to state a range of dates and to identify combinations that are the lowest priced in rank order. This is a fantastic app with tremendous potential! I strongly recommend using this app regularly because it's potential is absolutely amazing!
Great spontaneous trips
In my experience, hopper is a great tool for if you have flexible travel plans. One of my favorite pastimes is looking up random flights to dream destinations and because of that, hopper will send me random notifications on cheap flights to destinations near the dates that I looked at. It's amazing! Because if this I traveled to Taipei for ten days with a round trip ticket for $632 round trip from Denver! Also, I'll be going to Paris soon for $400 round trip from Denver as well. That's usually cheaper than flying to New York! Hopper doesn't always have the cheapest flights for set travel dates, but if you're flexible, hopper is the travel app to use.
