Eating made easy

Being vegetarians, my daughter and I always had hard time finding a restaurant with good vegetarian choices when we are out. Going out with co-workers would most of the time meant I ended up eating a salad since I could not check out the menus ahead of the time. After downloading ‘howudish’, I was pleasantly surprised to see so many local restaurants in our area actually offering many vegetarian and vegan choices that I was totally unaware of. Being a nutritionist and having all my friends in the same field, we all try to incorporate healthy choices in most of our meals and using ‘howudish’ is definitely going to help in maintaining our diet goals while eating out no matter what kind of diet plan we choose.

Although, I noticed that the nutrient values don’t seem to be precise, they definitely provide a good idea on what to expect from each dish. It was very easy to set up the profile and maneuver the app, it was extremely user friendly. I can definitely recommend it to my older family members who are not very computer savvy but would be interested in setting up profile on ‘howudish’.

One thing I wound like to see is the app showing the location of the restaurants in the order from closest to farthest.

A Dietitian’s Comments

Overall, HowUDish holds promise because healthy eating when dining out is a major challenge for many people. The sign up is straight forward and it’s fairly easy to use. The are 9 diet type choices to customize app and you can enter personal info and goals for weight, etc. Currently the main limitations for the app are related to its databases. Search results restaurants are often few or are mismatched with what a user would expect (eggplant caviar offered up for breakfast type searches). And many popular restaurant establishments do not appear. The app worked a little better in major urban areas vs suburbs. Over time, crowed-sourced data may help correct these things. From a dietitian’s point of view, however, the main concern is that the app implies a level of accuracy for the nutrition information (eg calories and other nutrients) that isn’t real, although a disclaimer is provided. All in all, if the databases become more robust, the app might sometimes help direct users to a better choice when eating out. It will never be able to let users know precise, accurate nutrition information for the dish. Users should know that the nutrition may be way off from what is actually being eaten and it should not be relied on for accurate info on gluten-containing dishes.

Dietitian’s Input

A Couple Dietitians

The app is a good concept and very user-friendly. It is easy to swipe left or right and navigate when searching for specific cuisine. It gives very general ideas of the calories, protein, fat, and carbohydrates in common foods. There are three weight goals (slim down, maintain, and bulk up) that differ little in the calorie contents of the foods that appear when searching restaurants around. The calorie parameters seem to have little to do with the weight goal selected and to truly get an estimate the app should require more information (height, time frame, age, etc.) to truly be applicable.
There is also a “cheat mode” that, theoretically, shows “worst options” however a number of the same foods appear in both cheat mode and regular mode. The definition of a “worst option” should be clarified. In addition to the three weight goals, there are nine diet options that may be chosen from. The app will leave much to be desired for anyone looking for permanent weight changes however is a good option if you are in search of vegetarian or vegan dishes around you. Be wary of the gluten free options that appear as these again are general food items.
