Ratings and Reviews
Good app, albeit with significant flaws
Overall a functional & okay app. Biggest annoyance is the slightest touch downward (so sensitive I sometimes feel the thought alone is enough) will close whatever you’re watching, and *most importantly* there’s no way to disable the gesture. Often the pause overlay (where screen dims and all the buttons are visible) just stays there permanently, until you touch the screen again, risking closing it like mentioned before. And then sometimes the next-episode option at the end of a show doesn’t show up, and is difficult to press. While I’ve been, impressed with Hulu’s ability to track show progress, which makes switching between devices/platforms simple and convenient, often something goes wrong with the playback, the app assumes it’s your fault and makes you watch various commercial breaks to start at the point in the video you were just recently watching. Plus if there’s content near the end of an episode, it’ll assume you watched everything and make you watch commercials in order to fast-forward to that end-of-episode content. Lastly, I do wonder why I’m repeatedly asked to rate the app after having already written this...
An Affront to the Art of User Interface Design
To describe Hulu’s new user interface as torturous barely scratches the surface. Touching the screen to access the player controls causes the entire image to be obscured. The controls remain on the screen for several seconds after playback resumes, leading the user to touch the screen in an attempt to make them go away (so the video can be viewed); this usually results in changing the position of the “playhead” or “timeline” control, skipping to some other random part of the program. There is simply no excuse for this poor of a design. But at least Library navigation is utterly bewildering, indicating the developers are fully committed to making the app unusable in any respect. Airplay support has also been removed, which is simply hateful.
This is terrible. They have way to many adds encouraging you to buy premium. I’m fine with adds I understand the need to make money through advertisement, although there are problems that if your WiFi cuts connection soon after an add you’ll have to re watch the add. This wouldn’t be that bad except the adds are 85-95 seconds each. During a 42 minute program you’ll experience 5, 80 second adds. Over the course of a season you’ll watch on average 6 hours of adds and over the duration of a series have fun wasting 20 hours of your life watching adds. This is if the WiFi connection doesn’t make you watch more time worth of adds. You do not only see more adds this decreases the speed in which you can watch shows, only wasting your time. I get adds, but know the definition of excessive and know where the line is of enjoyable content. I am still paying for subscription not paying to watch 15 hours of adds a series.
