A Hero of The Mac App Store 🏆

Note: As the author of “A Book About Hype”, this review is obviously going to be highly favorable towards Hype.

The Mac App Store is a great alternative to Adobe’s Creative Cloud. I don’t want to rent my software. With apps like Hype and Pixelmator, I don’t have to. But not only that, these apps are quite inexpensive for the power that they have. I started using Hype in 2011. Back then, it didn’t do much. But years later, Hype revolutionized the way I create interactive websites. Tumult worked hard over the years. They listened to customer feedback. They added new features and resolved issues. That hard work is apparent in the latest update. Hype 3.5 is a good replacement for Flash.

With websites being displayed on many different screen sizes, Hype’s new “Scaling” feature is handy. Combined with the previous responsive/flexible layout features, Hype can be used to create truly modern websites. But that’s not all… it can also be used to add interactivity to iBooks (it’s the perfect companion for iBooks Author). It can be used to make games. If you know to make a WebView in Xcode, Hype can be used to make apps. Hype can create animated GIFs and movie files. It’s like a Swiss Army Knife for web designers and developers.

You don’t need to know how to code to get started with Hype. It’s very inviting for beginners. However, to truly master the software, a solid understanding of JavaScript is helpful. If you don’t have such experience, don’t worry. Working with Hype can make you a better developer. At first I was relying on the software to create web projects. But the more I used Hype, the more I was adding JavaScript code to my projects. Hype has that flexibility. It’s powerful software for beginners and masters.

So, while you’re enjoying the new update, it’s important to remember that Tumult is fighting the good fight. It’s not easy to get through to Apple’s walled garden. While the Mac App Store is great for customers, it’s really hard on developers and publishers. It’s sad to see when other developers give up and remove their apps from the Mac App Store – but that didn’t happen here. Tumult battled through and met every requirement.

It’s a bit crazy to see such power in such a small application. Hype is about 30 MB. (That’s Megabytes… not Gigabytes.) Where does it put all that power? (This is great if you don’t have a lot of storage space on your computer.) Hype reminds me of the days of when I first started using Macs. Back then, I would get excited about software. Things felt new. I could do more than before. Apps like Pixelmator and Hype are bringing that feeling back.

The precision of Hype is apparent in the exported projects. They’re lightweight. The “Advanced Exporting” option can help you trim the project even more down to size. (Hype still has support for IE 6-9. If you don’t need that, the exported size can be significantly reduced in size.) Advertisers might struggle a bit to meet size caps. But for my book and web projects, Hype has been amazing. I created over 20 interactive examples in “A Book About Hype” that were built with Hype. Even the largest widget was still under 1 MB. The smallest widget was 95 KB.

Hype is great for designers that obsess about file size, but the software is also great for accuracy. The grid and guides are snappy! It’s easy to align elements. This allows designers and developers to work quickly but precisely. The new quick keys are also a speed boost. A new element, such as a text box, button or rectangle, can be created created with a single key stroke.

Creating animations with the timeline can be tricky to master at first. It’s keyframe based animation. The important thing to understand is that there can be more than one way to create animations. Using the “Capo” is like using a real musical instrament. You can get better with practice. It’s meant to speed up production. There are a lot of properties that can be controlled. Hype uses DOM manipulations and JavaScript. It’s pretty smooth and fast. However, HTML, CSS and JavaScript code can be added manually. This is another way to add animation and interactivity.

Unfortuantely, Hype still lacks a proper Physics API. There’s a lot more that can be done to improve this space. But meanwhile the GET / SET API is great. I was able to create a few mini games with these news options. Tasks that were difficult/impossible with Hype before are now trivial with the JavaScript API improvements. Elements can now be moved dynamically. This is huge for animation and interactivity.

The Hype community is great too. The forums are super friendly and helpful. If you stay patient with the developers, they do get around resolve issues. It’s fairly small team, but they’re able to create such powerful and professional software. You can tell they really understand how the Internet works.

Learn this program in a flash

I found Hype easy to learn. Very clean timeline with intuitive tools and features. I really like being able to import vector art saved out of Illustrator in SVG format. I created a nice interactive map with rollover sound and highlighting effects. I also have created about a dozen interactive maps with quadrants that highlight: Click on a quadrant to download a linked PDF. And today I am working on a "fly-in" animation for a website hompage – the pieces come together to form a logo. Read my fingertips: Tumult Hype animations are viewable on all screens, including mobile devices. Unlike sad Adobe Flash which disappointed this power Mac user for years. I tried converting an old Flash animation to an HTML 5 "Canvas" document using Adobe Animate CC 2017, but the old ActionScript 1.0 code could not be updated to ActionScript 3.0. I was able to rebuild the animation easily with Tumult Hype Pro. Yay.
