HyperSpace, the waveform-sculpting 3-D oscilloscope synth is the latest edition of our Space series.

HyperSpace uses a unique algorithm to generate endless mesmerizing images from sound. It works similarly to a harmonograph, but uses its 3 voice oscillators instead of pendulums to create images. Each oscillator is mapped to a dimension in 3-D space. Playing a single note creates a wave, like on an ordinary oscilloscope. Playing two notes at once creates a plane as with the harmonograph, and playing a three note chord creates a volume.

There are two oscillators to crossfade between. These can be set to standard shapes as with older synths, but HyperSpace also lets you sculpt the waves with touch! Changing the wave shapes of course alters the sound, but it also alters the generated imagery. The variety of imagery generated with this simple algorithm is truly astonishing.

Love this synth

I like how it's very basic with the waves and osc similar to classic mono synths. I don't use it for visuals so to me that isn't an important feature. However, there are so many scales to choose from and you can really program the sound you want easily. This makes some very cool gnarly sounds. The echo is cool too.

Some potential….not there yet

The most interesting thing about this app, and why I bought it, is the visualizer. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any way to save video, just audio. Without that, it is of very limited interest.

I am more interested in the visual aspect of this app then the sound generating parts. I am using this on my iPad 1 and so far I am only able to see the visuals in black and white. The app pics above show RGB colors but I haven't figured out how to see them yet. Maybe it's a bug for iPad 1 users. Maybe it's not able to handle it?

If I could get an app like this that creates these kind of visuals but without me having to play the sounds I'd get lost in it for hours. If the app could just detect pitch from outside sources like from the iPads mic or connected USB input/irig mic. That would be a great thing to see. I could then hook my iPad up VGA style out to a projector or HDTV and play my iPod music or even a DJ set and have this app just pick up the sounds through the devices built in mic. Viola. Instant VJ set for live performance.

I like the strange agency stuff. It makes me think. It gets me to explore. I have used almost all the other apps they build and they are all very experimental and fun at the same time. I don't always use them all the time but they have their time and place and if you are into tech with A/V this is a dev you should keep on your watch list. They are always bring new and interesting ideas to the world without much need to follow rules, trends,or hype. They build what they build. Generally it just makes noise and not too deep. I am glad to see the visual aspect breaking out in their apps. I can't wait to see what comes next.
