Decent but difficult to manage maps
Most things work well, but it’s quite difficult to manage maps. There’s no way to sort or organize maps, so if you’ve downloaded a large number of maps it’s very difficult to switch maps unless you’ve memorized all the section names.
Here’s what would make this a 5-star app:
1. A “change map” button on the map view that cycles through every downloaded map that covers the currently viewed location without switching tabs.
2. A way to return to the map view from the map list that Doesn’t recenter on your present location. Example: I’m reviewing maps for an area some 20 miles away, but after selecting a different map on the map list, attempting to return to the map view frequently recenters on my actual location, not the area I was previously viewing
3. Filters on the map list. I have dozens of maps spanning multiple states. I have no idea what the names of all the sections are so the search function is useless. I need some way to filter out maps that aren’t in the area I’m interested in.
The “change map” feature was added in version 8.2.3, allowing you to switch map type or scale while on the map-viewing screen. Tap the Mark button, choose whether you want your current physical location or the place you are looking at on the map, then tap the New Map New Scale button. If you have already downloaded the map you want, it will be displayed. If not, it will download and then be displayed. The new map will be centered on the same spot, so you won't loose your place.
There actually is a way to sort and organize maps besides just looking for a known quad name. To filter the maps for a certain area using the search function on the map list screen, simply enter the latitude and longitude separated by a space. Use whole numbers (such as 40 105) to see only all of the maps within that 1° x 1° square. Or add a decimal point (such as 39.8 105.5) to see only all of the maps within a 0.1° x 0.1° square.
Does everything better than anybody
I have used numerous mobile gps apps, and none comes even close to iHikeGPS. Being able to download topo and forest maps, for free, by WiFi before a trip is great. But if you are stuck on the trail outside your downloaded area, you can still get maps with even a minimal cell signal. The app handles waypoints, tracks and routes with ease, imports and exports gpx and kml format smoothly, and has the best built in help file I have ever seen. And everything can be edited right on the app. It’s all you need for gps.
I have been using this app for years to record gps tracks on the USGS topographic maps. It works wonderfully! I am using my Garmin units less now. You do need to bring along external batteries to power the iPhone gps on a long day trip. My only quibble is that it does not record enough data points for a long bike ride, so you must remember to save your data log every few hours or it will start to overwrite itself without warning when it has reached its maximum number of points.
If you enable notifications for iHikeGPS, it will give you a warning when the track log is full.
