The International Children's Digital Library (ICDL) brings a worldwide collection of free children's books to the iPad. The largest collection of its kind, the ICDL spans the globe with thousands of children's books from over 60 countries, in a wide assortment of beautiful languages with captivating illustrations. Meet the six Mongolian brothers in search of knowledge, the gray Palestinian peacemaker cat that does something most unusual to the other cat's ears, or a version of the Three Little Pigs that you surely have never heard before.
The ICDL is brought to you on the iPad with the kind support of the University of Maryland's Human-Computer Interaction Lab and the International Children's Digital Library Foundation. It presents:
* The full ICDL collection (thousands of books)
* Completely free
* Books in dozens of languages
* iPad support for rotation (automatically shows two pages at a time in landscape view)
* All books have summaries in English and the native language of the book
* Special support for readability - by zooming text (for many books)
* Many books translated into other languages
The goal of the library is to excite and inspire young readers to become better world citizens by leveraging technology to reach underserved children who have little access to libraries. The ICDL is offered free of charge to everyone, everywhere with no advertising.

Fixed iOS 4.2 bug where it would sometimes crash on launch. Sorry!

Can't rotate iPad inside this app or you will have to reboot
If you try to rotate the pad or change the orientation, or setup the smart cover as a backrest, the program gets caught in the "Help us translate" function and will not allow you to close out of that function, ever. If you close out of the app you can use the rest of the iPad but you will not be able to use ICDL again until you reboot the pad. Such a shame - we'd love to use this with students but this is almost unworkable.
Nothing more than the website
It’s just the website on an app. No additional features at all.
In fact, it’s just as broken as the website - I can log in, but as soon as I load a second page, I’m logged out again. Which means that, while I can read books, I can’t use any of the other advertised features of the website - i.e., no way to save books to a bookshelf or to return to a book where I left it.
They really need to do a native app if they want it to function.
Great idea... Needs some improvements
Great resource for books but the app needs some improvements. The ability to flip pages with a swipe would be helpful and an option to favorite or save books would also be great. It needs just some minor tweaks to make it an amazing app.
With Family Sharing set up, up to six family members can use this app.
