Editors’ Notes

A clean and simple writing interface.

Indispensable

jmck

I've been a user of Ulysses for 3 or 4 years, and while I applauded every useful
feature addition along the way, I also wondered how many people there were out there who would really be willing to buy in to such a robust textual working environment. And so I am glad that the company has moved to a subscription model, as it offers me reassurance that they will be around for years to come, to support their software. Other writing apps that have come into the market recently started out with the subscription model, which is I assume why no one is mad about it. But Ulysses is really far more robust than they (Bear, Standard Notes) are, and is priced about the same.
To those writers who do not wish to pay for Ulysses, I would suggest using a plain text format and an open source editor such as Vim, as this is the only other path that offers simplicity, flexibility, and the assurance of longevity. Of course, you will give up the niceties of a super focused, well thought out, mobile and desktop writing studio, but at least you won't have to pay for it.

Bought the app now I have to subscribe?

FistOf Strength

I bought the app a year ago. They decided to change to subscription. Now I have read-only mode. I bought a WRITING app and I can't write with it because the developers are so GREEDY they retro-actively deactivated a product I already paid for. I can NOT use something I already GAVE THEM MONEY for. They took away something I already gave them money for, because they wanted to make MORE MONEY. On what planet is that fair? In what moral universe is that not shameful greed?

Hey folks, if you want to pay the subscription go ahead. Your choice. What kind of company are you supporting? Who says they won't pull a fast one on you in a year, in two years, once all your data is locked in. I'm moving to Scrivener. They're just as good, even better in some respects. Best of all: they're HONEST.

Hey developers: why do you deactivate a product that people already paid for to get them to move to a new subscription service? I know it is legal, but is it right? Why don't you let people use the version they paid for? Why is ios app and Mac app READ-ONLY? Do you know what a conscience is, or is money more imporant than your reptuation? Do you really think this is the best way to get people to trust you?

Developer Response

First of all, we are sorry about the way our migration to a subscription-based model came across to you. The pre-subscription version of Ulysses that you have purchased still works, and will work for the time to come: we will never lock you out your data. To install it again, please go to the App Store go to your personal settings. Then select "Purchased" and tap the cloud icon next to Ulysses to download the pre-subscription version. As for our decision to switch to subscription, this was not an easy solution for us either. However, subscriptions support single purchases for both platforms, allow for free trials and ensure that Ulysses remains a sustainable app in the time to come. If you are interested, we have explained this more detail in a blogpost on medium.com/building-ulysses. The subscriptions are valid for iOS and Mac, we don't plan on introducing yet another system. Please don't hesitate to write us via support@ulyssesapp.com if you've got any further questions. –Eline
