What's New

Version 1.1.5

Pixelmator Pro 1.1.5 includes a number of improvements that make Pixelmator Pro faster and more responsive and brings preliminary support for macOS Mojave (a major update to Pixelmator Pro with full macOS Mojave support is coming in a few weeks’ time!).

• Improved layer movement and editing performance. You should now be able to select, move, and start editing layers in complex documents much more quickly.
• Improved document opening performance. Large and complex documents should now be opened much faster — in some cases over 10 times faster.
• The performance of the Quick Selection tool has been improved by 20%.
• The cursor of the Paint, Erase, and Pixel Paint tools will now be displayed as a crosshair if it is smaller than 2 pt on the screen (based on your zoom level).
• All fonts will now be displayed in the Type tool’s font pop-up menu instead of just the ones optimized for your current region.
• Guides can now be moved while using the Type and shape tools.
• There is now a Guides submenu in the View menu with options to clear and lock persistent guides as well as customize alignment guides.
• The range of the Spin, Box, Disc, and Motion blur effects has been extended — hold down the Option key and drag the Amount/Radius sliders to blur layers even more.
• When applying effects, such as False Color, Clouds, and Checkerboard, which fill areas with color, you can now adjust the opacity of each color (in the Colors window).
• The Invert color adjustment now inverts colors mathematically rather than perceptually, just like the Invert effect does.
• When using the Crop tool, the cropping box will now be drawn over your entire image, not the area on which you are currently zoomed in.

• When opening the Photo Browser, the Photos library would occasionally not load the first time. Fixed.
• Fixed an issue with hue-adjusting (Hue, Select Color, Color Balance) color adjustments applied to layer masks.
• Fixed an issue with using the Gradient Fill tool on layer masks with blending modes other than Normal.
• Fixed an issue with applying color adjustments on empty masks — after applying the Invert adjustment, for example, it would not be immediately rendered in the image.
• Resetting certain effects, such as Perspective Transform, Pinch, and others, would not redraw the entire image correctly. Fixed.
• Dragging and dropping layers with masks from one document into another would not preserve the position of the mask. Fixed.
• Fixed an issue with undoing an image size change after selecting and transforming part of an image layer.
• Undoing an image size change while being fully zoomed out would make it impossible to change the zoom level. Fixed.
• Undoing an image size change in documents with text would sometimes break the layout of the text. Fixed.
• When using the Crop tool in images containing areas beyond the canvas, those areas would not be displayed correctly. Fixed.
• Writing and deleting text with the Stroke layer style applied would temporarily leave parts of the deleted text in the image. Fixed.
• When performing many repeated actions in a row, thumbnails would not always update immediately. Fixed.
• Added a few fixes related to SVG rendering during import and export.
• Fixed an issue with using the Retouch and Paint tools in large documents that would sometimes cause Pixelmator Pro to quit unexpectedly.
• Fixed an issue with infinite memory allocation when applying effects to horizontal and vertical line shapes.
• Less memory will be used for the undo history of the paint, distort, and retouching tools.
• Opening the font family and font face pop-up menus in the Type tool would sometimes cause Pixelmator Pro to quit unexpectedly if certain system fonts were disabled. Fixed.
• Fixed an issue that would cause Pixelmator Pro to quit unexpectedly while closing a document.

Works great..had to update my firmware for NIKON D850

Emerald Lioness

I’ve been a user of Pixelmator for years.I know you guys are still working on this app, but it’s buggy. I will be using the healing tool then all of a sudden the picture goes black just shows a yellow line where I was editing. Then I have to quit and start it up again until it does it again. Sometimes, it just quits and I have to restart.

ALSO…THIS APP DOES NOT SUPPORT NIKON RAW FILES (NEF) FOR THE D850! ARE YOU KIDDING ME…… NOT VERY PRO. WILL YOU EVER CHANGE THIS PIXELMATOR? Most consumers will just fine with cheaper version of Pixelmator. It will do everything you need it to do without spending $60.

Pixelmator Pro is still NOT compatible with Nikon D850, but now High Sierra does.. When I try to open in Pixelmator Pro to edit them it tell me either the file is damage or the file is not compatible with Pixelmator. Almost a year the camera has been out and Apple’s version high “photoshop” can hang with a PRO CAMERA….FAIL!

So, it turned out that there was a firmware update for my camera for it to be compatible for my mac and RAW images. Works great! Changed by rating from a 3 to a 5 star. Go to the Nikon site and download the firmware update on an sd card and load it into the camera! Perfecto!

Awesome, thanks for taking the time to update the review! And let us know if you have any other feedback or bump into any other issues.

When will the product be ready for release?

Today I tried a simple project involing a low-res photo. I just need to cut two objects and swap their placement in the image. I successfully selected, cut, pasted into new layer(s) and flipped their orientation. Out of no where the first layer vanished. When I tride to select all it showed control handles for an invisible object that was in a completely differerent / arbitrary place. The thumbnail for the layer looked correct but there was no data in the main workspace. I verifed the layer order was correct. I verified I had not accidentally activacted a mask. I close the app and reopened —now the thumbnail is also empty. The pixels in the layer appear to be completely gone.

After letting this app collect dust I gave it a chance again. Within minutes I had a vanishing layer. Data loss.

On an aside, even if the app worked flawlessly, the fact that that UI moves around constantly (grows/shrinks depending on chosen tool) means I can’t use this app without feeling a disoriented motion sickness.

I'm sorry to hear you've had such a frustrating time with Pixelmator Pro. On the whole, we've fixed almost all of the bugs reported to us and a few more that we've found ourselves. However, this particular bug is not one we've come across so far, so if you could contact us at with more details, that would be very much appreciated and we'd do our best to help you out!

Wonderful app, except for the memory leaks

I’ve been using Pixelmator for going on a decade now, and I finally upgraded to Pro. It’s fantastic. Getting everything back under one window is a great move. It looks good and is very intuitive. It feels like Photoshop, but with the classic Pixelmator ease of use and price.

Here’s my problem – after a few minutes of use, the RAM usage skyrockets to well over 100 GB. Since my computer only has 16 GB of RAM, you can imagine this would be an issue,. I don’t know why Activity Monitor is reporting that, but it eventually freezes my entire computer. My best guess is a memory leak of unknown origin.

Be wary if you’re running a 2017 MacBook Pro. This will easily be a 4 or 5 star review once I get this issue fixed. I’ve emailed support and will update this review accordingly.

Developer Response

Hi there, thanks for reporting this issue — it appears to be fairly rare, but we've now found a fix for it, which will be included in the next Pixelmator Pro update. I see we've already shared this updated version with you, but if anyone else is having the same issue, feel free to sign up for our public beta or email us at!
