“PocketPhonics teaches the basics of reading and writing to young kids. Most surprising? It seems to work.” 148apps.com
PocketPhonics teaches kids letter sounds, first words and handwriting. It is used in hundreds of elementary schools and pre-schools, and tens of thousands of homes. It is aligned with the Common Core State Standards, and independent research (see appsinmypocket.com/research) found children learnt nine times faster using PocketPhonics compared to a classroom lesson.
A certificate is emailed to you each time your child masters a set of letter sounds or can write a group of letters. Certificates are designed for printing and keeping, providing a record of achievement and a wonderful source of encouragement. Kids are so proud of themselves when they see their certificates.

Letter sounds are taught in small groups and a child is shown how to blend them to sound out words (e.g c-a-t is cat).
PocketPhonics shows children how to write letters using an arrow they can follow with their finger or stylus. PocketPhonics supports two different writing styles, and for each style, kids can write in lowercase, uppercase and cursive.
By registering, parents and teachers can monitor kids’ progress online, and receive a weekly email on their child's progress. A child’s progress is tracked across multiple devices. As the child learns something, the emphasis is switched to what they next need to learn. For instance, when a child learns a word, the app replaces it with a more challenging one.
Teachers don't need to worry about making sure kids have the same iPad each lesson simplifying the management of iPads in schools. If a child switches iPads, they automatically continue learning from where they finished previously.
Phonics (letter sounds) help children to read by understanding the sounds that letters make. The Congressionally-mandated National Reading Panel concluded that “children who have phonics instruction read better and spell better than other children”.
Letter sounds (how we say the letters when we use them in words) are not the same as the letter names (what we call the letters). Montessori & other experts recommend not including letter names when teaching letter sounds as it can confuse children by introducing too much at once. PocketPhonics focuses solely on letter sounds so children can learn to read more quickly.
PocketPhonics teaches the sounds for all the letters in the alphabet plus over 30 letter sounds like ‘sh’ and ‘ch’, because they are key to reading so many frequently-used words.
Using a unique, “letter sounds make words” spelling game, children learn how to sound out and spell 160 frequently used words.

Urgent bug fix for some customers on certificates
Just what I needed!
I'm a first grade teacher with children of many skill levels in my classroom. I needed a solid researched program to help children learn letter sounds, and to be able to use them in making words. I needed this to be motivating enough that I wouldn't need to be standing over the child insuring that they were staying on it. I needed it to be individualized for individual needs, and beginning with very basic sounds, yet also having the capability to include consonant and vowel digraphs. I wanted to get the results go each child's progress to be sent to me. I wanted it to use lower case letters, and to be American English sounds. I needed a program that could remain on the same 6 letters for one student and yet go ahead to more letters for another. I'm very pleased with Pocket Phonics. It does what I am needing. I just wish I had more than one iPad for my class.
My son has been using this app and his progress has been great. I've contacted support to provide suggestions and they responded promptly. You can clearly see the time and effort the developers have put into this app. I can't say enough. The fact that it incorporates writing the letters, the letters are sounded out, the spelling challenges that use the sound of the letters and has the child pick the letters to make words, I could go on and on but it's just easier for you to get the application and experience it yourself.
I know this review sounds like it might be coming from the company but I don't work for them. I wish I did so I could say I was part of this wonderful application and help all those children.
Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing what else you come up with.
Glad I purchased this app. It is very good for understanding where my child is with regards to reading ability. He is learning words, which is great. I thought this app was too simple at first but it does get more difficult as it goes along. Simple but effective. Like the online certificates and email updates also.
