Tumblr is a place to discover and post about stuff you love, and join communities of people who love that same stuff. It’s pretty neat.

Q: What can I post on Tumblr?
A: Photos, videos, live videos, songs, text—pretty much anything.

Q: Can I make gifs?
A: Yes, you CAN make gifs! You can make them out of videos, bursts, live photos, or just shoot them on the spot.

Q: What’s the deal with “reblogging”?
A: It’s a way to take the stuff you find on Tumblr and make it your own. You can repost other people’s posts to your own blog. You can add commentary if you like. Other people can do the same with your posts. That’s how ideas spread on Tumblr, and it’s how communities form around them.

Q: Who’s on Tumblr?
A: People who are posting and reblogging about interesting stuff that you’re interested in. Politics. Movies. Memes and such. If you’ve ever seen anything interesting on the internet, chances are it came from Tumblr.

Q: How do I talk to people on Tumblr?
A: A few different ways. You can comment on a post, or you can reblog a post to your own Tumblr and add commentary, or you can send a private message. Whatever suits the occasion.

Q: How do I find stuff to follow?
A: Search for whatever you’re interested in. We’ll show you great posts about that stuff, and get you following the people who make those posts. Oh, you can also follow a search itself, and we’ll put sift the best material from that search right into your dashboard.

Q: What kind of stuff are people talking about on Tumblr *right now*?
A: Whatever’s happening in the world. The real world, the world of fiction, the world of pop culture, the world of academics, the world of safety and justice, the world of sports. Whatever world you live in, you’ll find it among all the trending topics in the search tab.

Q: Do all Tumblrs look the same?
A: No! You can totally customize your Tumblr’s appearance, right down to the colors and fonts you use.

Q: How will people find my Tumblr?
A: Tag your posts. Tumblr is full of passionate communities of people who are constantly searching through tags for new posts about stuff they love. Your stuff could be that stuff.

Q: Am I ready to download Tumblr, deepen my perspective, and forever change the way I think?
A: Yes.

What's New in Version 9.3

Why do we malign bugs so? Are we not their Creators? As we crush them, do we not crush a part of ourselves? It was not weakness or failure that allowed them into this world. Nay, it was the light of innovation that we cast into the dark corners that these bugs call home. ‘Twas our torches that sent these bugs skittering. This update does not contain bug fixes. No! This update contains bug promises. Promises to find them a new home where each may pursue those interests most central to them.

No Excuse for this App

For one of the most popular social networking sites in the world, and after all this time, and given that most people access it through their phones, you'd think Tumblr would manage to put together a decent app. Alas, their army of nerds has failed. If you follow more than a few active users and only check your account a couple times a day, you have to scroll and scroll and scroll, waiting for each new page to load, to find the specific kind of content you're looking for (say, videos, images, etc.). If the app crashes, you have to spend another five minutes scrolling to get back to your place. It's 2017. How is this still such an issue? There should be some kind of comprehensive, accessible filter that lets you fine-tune your feed. And automatically brings you back to where you had last scrolled? There's not even a reliable workaround: the archive button doesn't exist or the user has to choose a separate app theme or something with that specific function? It's definitely not there by default. And the ads. They're so large. Again, it makes infinite scrolling a chore; a quarter of each scroll is ad space, meaning more pauses for loading and less easily accessible content. I'd happily by a reasonable subscription to disable the ads. Is programming really this impossible?

The Tumblr app is great, especially with the newest updates that allow users to add images to text posts and reblogs.
That said, it's not perfect. Sometimes the app will die, and it will require you to redownload it, or sometimes it simply crashes, and you scream in anger, throwing your phone out the window in defiance.
But even with the flaws, it's great. You can meet amazing people, see beautiful art, or read something that's so professional and glorious, that you'd think it was straight out of a best-selling book.
The only thing missing now is the ability to add pictures when answering asks, but that isn't a major issue.
You're doing great, staff.

Hypocrisy at its Best

I’ve been a tumblr-er for several years now. I love just scrolling through the thousands of blogs and posts and find some fascinating and titillating things to capture my attention. So for the first time , I attempted to post my own video and not simply repost or reblog someone else’s.

In moments after posting, I received an email stating that I had violated the terms and agreements and posting policies and that my post was being removed. The nerve!!! I was shocked. Appalled. The types of posts that I routinely view day in and day out on tumblr, out-violate these same terms and conditions 1000 times greater than my little 25 second post, which violated no licensing laws since it was of myself only!!

So I submitted a request to reconsider to the app “monitors” in which I was told the same thing and to be careful as too many “violations” would get me suspended.

So I’m logging in a formal complaint to the developers and moderators and whatever they call themselves, that would allow the types of the majority of stuff posted, subsist without reprimand but then chastise me and remove, for the exact same type of posts. I’m heated about it!!
