“The new Foursquare, like Netflix, takes a lot of the work out of finding the right thing for the right moment.” — The Verge

How It Works:

Tell Foursquare what you like — be specific, like “craft beer” or “fried chicken,” or more general, like “outdoor seating” or “romantic places.” Every search is tailored to your tastes, your past ratings, and picks from friends and experts you trust.

A note on battery –
We've spent years developing the location technology that powers Foursquare, making it extremely power efficient. But, as with all apps of this type, please note that continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

What's New in Version 8.10

In this update, you’ll find a newly designed homepage to make it even easier to find the hottest spots near you. We’ve also added support for Handoff so when you’re looking at a place in the Foursquare app, you can easily access it on your Mac and all of your other iOS devices. Need directions to the spot you just discovered? You can now easily access Citymapper from the app to help get you there. And as always, we’ve got some speed improvements and bug fixes. Happy exploring!

Contextual recs just keep getting better

I must admit that I'm a bit disappointed with contextual (real-time) notifications. I don't mind passively sharing my location with 4SQ, but I expect for it to work both ways. I just spent an entire day in a new city without receiving any passive recs. This is the fifth time (4th different city) that has happened. What are you doing with all of these awesome tips that we're posting?

I've been using foursquare consistently since 2009, and I was among the first 40,000 users. It's sad to see that some of my favorite features (points, leaderboard, and badges) have now been removed. Said gamification elements compelled me to get out and explore the world around me.

That said, I'm excited to see where this new direction, that Foursquare is embarking upon, leads the company. With all the data that they are now gathering with "Pilgrim", passive recs should improve greatly in the coming weeks and months.

Although I'm not completely happy with all of the recent changes, I'm going to remain a loyal user of an app that has brought so much fun, joy, and adventure into my life over the years.

The Best Keeps Getting Better

Foursquare is already the best way to find personal recommendations and learn about the city around you. But this most recent update addresses a bunch of people's privacy issues. No need for an account, but complete access to the excellent information from the Foursquare community.

Update: Check out that super fresh design! Love it! Plus the tabs make way more sense now.

Great alternative to Yelp

The app works very well and has a nice layout. The platform itself is a great alternative to Yelp: the point system is much better than the stars, and they've done a good job at making sure you don't get Yelpers ruining a restaurant's reputation with dumb comments that take half an hour to read.
