“The new Foursquare, like Netflix, takes a lot of the work out of finding the right thing for the right moment.” — The Verge
How It Works:
Tell Foursquare what you like — be specific, like “craft beer” or “fried chicken,” or more general, like “outdoor seating” or “romantic places.” Every search is tailored to your tastes, your past ratings, and picks from friends and experts you trust.

A note on battery –
We've spent years developing the location technology that powers Foursquare, making it extremely power efficient. But, as with all apps of this type, please note that continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
What's New in Version 8.9.1
This update introduces our brand-new saved places tab. We’ve heard from a ton of you about how much you love to save great places to refer back to later. Now, those places have a dedicated home that’s just one tap away. We’ve also added more details to places, so you can see everything your friends are saying about them and if they’ve made our new “Best of” lists.
In the iPad app, we’ve added the ability to write tips. Take advantage of that big keyboard and start leaving tips at your favorite places today!
As always, this update has some great speed improvements and bug fixes as well. Love Foursquare? Drop us a rating in the App Store!
Passive recs keep getting better
I must admit that I'm a bit disappointed with passive (real-time) recs. I don't mind passively sharing my location with 4SQ, but I expect for it to work both ways. I just spent an entire day in a new city without receiving any passive recs. This is the fifth time (4th different city) that has happened. What are you doing with all of these awesome tips that we're posting?
I've been using foursquare consistently since 2009, and I was among the first 40,000 users. It's sad to see that some of my favorite features (points, leaderboard, and badges) have now been removed. Said gamification elements compelled me to get out and explore the world around me.
That said, I'm excited to see where this new direction, that Foursquare is embarking upon, leads the company. With all the data that they are now gathering with "Pilgrim", passive recs should improve greatly in the coming weeks and months.
Although I'm not completely happy with all of the recent changes, I'm going to remain a loyal user of an app that has brought so much fun, joy, and adventure into my life over the years.
I absolutely love the new Foursquare app! Finally I have a resource I can use that will actually cater results to my personal tastes and interests. This app is like having a friend in every city that knows what you like and will even give you recommendations when walking around. The tips have helped me countless times on deciding what the very best item to order is. The save function is amazing being able to create a list of places I loved or places I need to still get to. I am so happy to have found this app and you will too!!!
In terms of search recommendations, Yelp always gave better, more accurate results. However, Foursquare had this beautiful little category called "Sights," the one reason I recommended it to friends. When traveling, it was incomparable and essential. Not quite attractions, not quite "things to do", the Sights section cobbled together a creative and perfect mix of landmarks, cool photo ops, views, parks, museums, public artwork and other awesome suggestions a traveler or newcomer to a city would be excited about. For no reason at all, they took it out. Very disappointing.
