# Fun Facts
Celebrating 75 Years of The New York Times Crossword: When Margaret Farrar, the grande dame of crosswords, retired from The Times in 1969, Will Weng, previously head of The Times’s Metropolitan Desk, took over as the crossword editor. He added sly humor to the clues and more wordplay to the themes.
Tons of fun; nav is good, not great
Most importantly: Nothing's my I'm about to say should impact your purchasing decision. If you like doing crosswords and you're okay with buying add-ons (either puzzle collections or the NYT puzzle subscription) you should pick this up. The navigation is more than good enough. I, however, will quibble.
It's nice to move quickly from one clue to the next with the arrows provided, but there are a few more common navigations that I wish the app provided directly:
- Better navigation within the local grid. The words directly adjacent to each other in a cluster aren't always the next/previous ones numerically.
- Better "non-manipulating" navigation within the word. Sometimes I misclick the square I want, and would like to adjust one or two squares left/right/up/down, but one can only go backward destructively (by deleting letters) and forward by entering letters into the box.
One affordance that would address both problems is a set of four-arrow "cursor keys" that would move the cursor up/down/left/right without modifying the contents of the box under the cursor. I doubt that's the only solution, however.
Anyway, great content for crossword fans, my navigation quibbles notwithstanding.

Update brings errors...
Immediately after updating the app, there were clearly some wires crossed somewhere, because the stats section was showing a longer streak than I was actually entitled to. Later it seemed to have been fixed, and then it was wrong again, and now it seems correct, but for how long? Also, even though I previously had notifications turned on for the publication of each day's puzzle, and that's what the setting still shows and I have not changed anything, I am no longer getting them.
I don't like that the box which appears immediately after successfully completing a puzzle no longer shows the time.
Otherwise, I find the app easy to use, and I really enjoy doing the puzzle this way.
Enjoyable but could be a little better
I enjoy the app and use it just about every day. It works smoothly and reliably. My only complaint is that puzzles with unusually formatted answers (rebuses or special characters) can require all sorts of guessing before finding the one solution that will be marked as correct (like whether to use a star or type "star", or whether the 'across' letter or the 'down' letter is desired). It would be nice if multiple solutions that are correct could be accepted. Minor problem, though. Overall, this is still a great app.
