Good, But Not Great
In 1998, Konami released the game Metal Gear Solid for the Playstation. It was a huge sucess and is well known for setting the standard for the stealth game genre and analysing themes such as politics and warefare. Metal Gear Solid then spawned many sequels and spin-offs, soon becoming a series. Metal Gear Solid Touch is a loose port of the hugely sucessful Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. And believe me, loosly is putting it lightly. The game is basicly a series of simple sniping levels tied together with a few pictures and dialouge in between levels. Metal Gear Solid Touch is pretty much a sniping game with the title "Metal Gear Solid" slapped on. There are no cutscenes, no witty conversations, and no cardboard boxes for Snake to hide in. There is almost nothing here that made the series so sucessful. The game itself is not bad, though. The graphics are pretty good and the music is impressive, but if it weren't for the title, no one would likely get this game. The price for the full version is too high as well. $7.99 is a lot to ask for a game like this. This games should be priced more around $1.99 or $2.99. A jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch is capable of emulating Playstation games, so I don't believe it would be THAT hard to create a "real" Metal Gear Solid game. Only die-hard Metal Gear fans would likely buy this title. For me, I don't think this game will stay long on my iPod Touch. Konami, please make a game worthy of the Metal Gear title!
Excellent 'lite' version of a major game
This demo seems huge at 81 megs. For that size, I expected a great game., and I think I got it. It isn't that long, but the first time through shouldn't be easy, and will take more than one try. And isn't so predictable that it won't be fun the 2nd or 3rd time either. The controls are a little hard to aim and play, but maybe only because I'm not familiar with iTouch games yet. It is basically a "Hogan's Alley" shooting range type of game, only with ducking behind an object, and with a short range automatic weapon, and long range sniper scope as your weapons. It plays well, although one flaw with games like this is that my finger is often over whatever I'm shooting at. Which can be frustrating to be precise. (My finger doesn't have to be, but it just feels natural to aim that way rather than swipe under the head shot you are going for.) Sniper mode works, and there is fear in leaving yourself zoomed in for too long. The production values are higher than any other free game I've seen, and while blatantly not near the huge scope of the MGS games on the consoles and PC, it does seem fun in its own right. (Now $8 fun, that you'll have to decide on your own as I'll probably wait for the price to drop.)
85MB of fun!!!
I saw the full version of this game a while back and figured the game would be a big disappointment on the iPhone. Other games like Galaga and some of the racing games just simply don't play well on the iPhone. Thank goodness Konami got it right. I'm glad Snake can't move. It simplifies the game and makes it a much more enjoyable game because it's a controllable game. The sound and graphics are top notch. I have played and finished this game on the PS3, and I wasn't expecting it to be as good as that version. This is a phone and not a PS3. I hope everyone who downloads this game understands that and understand that this is the best format for this game based on the fact that it's for the iPhone.
