Disastrous new version
ESPN really messed up with this one. I was not that impressed with the old version, but this new one is terrible. Navigation is really, really off. It is often unclear how you get from where you are to where you want to go. Obvious gestures don’t work as expected. For example when looking at scores, it shows them for a specific date. The user assumes that a swipe will go to the next or previous date, but nope, the designers have decreed that you will hit a tiny icon for calendar, hit the new (tiny) date, then return to the your new scores.
That brings up a major issue. All the touch spots are WAY to small. I am an iOS developer and it looks to me like ESPN has violated the guidelines for the size of touch features. My success rate for electing the touch I want is about 50%. That means half of all touches are errant.
This is just a really really bad release.
Before the current version, I could quickly find games and their respective lines. In addition, I could find upcoming games with ease. Unfortunately, ESPN thought to themselves, let’s make a worse app. Now, I am stuck waiting for the page to update, in order to see games, and god forbid, I try to find the lines for upcoming games. This coming Saturday is the Final Four for NCAA Men’s Basketball, but apparently, there are games this weekend or Monday, according to the app. I will say that ESPN has improved their coverage of European Futball, but other than that, this app is well below average. If you are an avid sports fan, this is not the app for you, but if you are looking for yesterday’s scores, then this is the perfect app for you because that’s the only thing it is good at.
Great app with some flaws.
I love this app mostly. I would suggest a few things to be changed. Add a favorite sport section to the iPhone version (like the iPad version), on the home page to have the games you have alerted first, and then your favorite sports/teams rather than just random games. Also it's really slow to send an alert. It should be more immediate. Would definitely be the best sports app with all of these improvements.
