2011 APPY Award Finalist
“All I can say is WOW and double WOW! I have had Audubon Birds for a couple of years and have seen it grow into the BEST bird app for iOS! ...I am just blown away with all the new additions. My favorite is showing all the birds in a group (thumbnails) and when tapped lightly the name shows up. What a way to learn new birds. I just cannot express how much I love the update. Thank you…” - E Uhls

This is a decent app. The Natureshare community part is very good and I really like that. However, the identification part is lacking. All of the illustrations in the app are pictures, first off. I don't think pictures are the best way to identify birds. Even worse, it only points out field marks on one or two of the pictures, and that always seems to be the adult male! Also, there are a few points which are wrong in the content. First off it states Thayer's Gull has more black under the wing then Herring, even though the opposite is true. Secondly, the last picture of a Slaty Backed Gull. I suppose it could be a Slaty Back, but it would be impossible to identify it as such in North America, and it's supposed to be guide to North America! The final in amuses me more than it annoys me. The Black Backed and White Wagtail were lumped into one species years ago, yet the app still considers them separate species! To make the whole situation even more surreal, it has updated the Sage Sparrow and Xantus Murrelet splits, which happened in the last two years! Consequently, the app is good, but cannot yet replace the written field guide.
Good except too much Big Brother
I find the photos and sounds very useful and especially like using the 'similar' feature (to consider lookalikes). The intelligent search has not been too helpful. My *one supreme complaint* is that they took away my ability to keep my own list of sightings -- unless I'm connected to the 'net and logged in. I have an iPod -- wifi only! When I'm in the field I *can't* connect and I'm not interested in sharing everything anyway. Very disappointing to have this capability taken away in an 'upgrade'!
Nice but audio buttons could be better
Have yet to use all components but what i have seems to be good. Use quite a bit in the field especially the audio. Only frustrating part at this point is the audio. Frequently the audio buttons don't respond and have to press multiple times to activate. Also annoying is having the "rate this app" screen appear from time to time.... Still worth it though just some fix-its to do.
