"Catan", the legendary strategy game provides gaming fun anytime, anywhere.

True to the original game, you can compete with up to four players for the most settlements, the longest roads and the largest army. You can trade with each other and claim the precious land with all its resources.

The game allows you to challenge other Catan fans online via cross-platform multiplayer to prove your strategy skills or play against the AI:
Various computer opponents, each with their own individual characteristics, will prove themselves worthy competitors: the pirate Jean, who knows no compromise, Vincent the merchant, who never allows himself to be cheated, Sean the knight, who takes what is rightfully his...

The popular Catan expansions "Seafarers", "Cities and Knights" and two new special scenarios are available as In-App purchases.

The complete Seafarers expansion includes more than 10 additional scenarios with an extensive campaign. Become Harbormaster, discover new islands and extra game elements like ships, gold fields, treasures and pirates. Ahoy!

The Cities and Knights expansion introduces various new gameplay mechanics that add even more variety to Catan. Invest new trade goods in city improvements to build one of the three metropolises of Catan – but beware of the barbarians attracted by Catan’s new wealth! You’ll need your best knights to fend them off! C&K contains a short campaign and 7 challenging maps.

Exciting adventures await you in the two new scenarios "Enchanted Land" and "The Great Canal". Vanquish dragons and bag their treasures or build a canal to help barren grain fields bloom once more.

Catan FAQ:

Question: An expansion seems gone after an update or reinstallation of Catan or after restoring the device?
Answer: Don’t worry! Your initial purchase is already saved in your iTunes account. You can restore your InApp purchases by selecting the restore-option in the Catan IAP menu.

Question: I lost my campaign progress after reinstalling, updating or restoring my device. Is there any way to restore it?
Answer: When saved games can’t be automatically restored, we’ve integrated a cheat code: In the campaign mode go to select player and enter „CatanWarp*“ (* = 1–15) as your player name and confirm. Exit the game via the home button and restart it. The campaign can now be continued from the specified level number (1–15). Levels up to the specified number will be unlocked in the custom game mode as well.

Question: Are dice rolls really random?
Answer: Of course! All dice rolls are 100% random and not modified in any way. We’re avid Catan players ourselves. We’ve played the iOS version hundreds of times while developing the program. There have been times when we won and lost a few games in a row because of the dice - just like when playing the board game!

Artificial Intelligence game mode cheats

I like the app in many ways and have played the app version off and on for over a year. (I love playing the board game). However, the app is programmed for the artificial intelligence opponents to cheat and almost always win at the medium or higher difficulty. It is programmed for the AI opponents to cheat some of the time at the easier difficulty level. (REALLY???? There should be a more elegant programming solution for making the game level more difficult than to have the AI opponents totally cheat!)
About 90% of the time, at the medium difficulty level, the AI opponents in the game will roll a dice number that gives them a resource. Much of the time, especially if you are NOT losing heavily, that dice number will also NOT give YOU a resource. In addition, quite often, if you are getting ahead or have refused to trade a resource with the AI opponent, the dice rolls for the artificial opponents will very frequently be 7s so they can pick off any resources you do have. That will continue until the AI opponents are way ahead and you are losing again.
Winning a level is very sweet if you can endure the frustration of watching the AI cheat massively. The dice rolls are totally not random, even if the app developers try to claim otherwise.
I would give this game a 5 + if the game played fair in the Artificial Intelligence opponent mode for all of the difficulty levels.

Not so random

This game could really be great, with a little more work from the developers. I like to play against the computer so that I don't have to wait for live online players to get around to taking their turn, and they don't have to wait for me. The problem with the computer players is that first of all, 7's are rolled way more often than what is realistic. Between the knight cards and the 7s, the robber will tend to move 3 or 4 times before your turn comes around again. I read a lot of reviews about the IA players ganging up on you. I started playing in "easy" mode and didn't see this too much, unless one player was clearly dominating the game or on the verge of winning. I changed it to "medium" and the game really did get difficult. (Why will no one trade with me? I am not anywhere near the lead...) but if you wanted a challenge, you'll get one! The other problem (and this happened in "easy" mode) is that if you do take the lead and are doing well, the other players gang up on you in such a way that you will literally have no resources (continually stolen through the knight cards/robber). The robber will always be on your most profitable resources, just moving back and forth between your areas. The conveniently rolled 7s abound. The die rolls should maybe be more random?

Played A Lot!

I really like this game. I got it because my real playing is so i frequent, and I wanted to become a better player. This game will allow you to quickly try out various strategies without fear of losing to your friends and family.

I've only played against the computer and on the basic setup, so my review is limited to that aspect of the game.

As to the AI: it does seem as though the dice rolls can be non random at times. My favorite is when you've had little to no rolls of a common number. Then after the robber is on that number which would normally give you a resource, that number is rolled several times. This keeps the statistical spread right but at a time when is is most disadvantageous. This same thing happens in real life though, and I've seen it happen to the computer players after I've placed the robber too. So, the random vs not random debate may simply be our lack of trust when things seem to be going against us--not sure.
