What's New in Version 5.7
Lighten color of search bar when editing publisher and series.
Added locked attribute to prevent updates from automatic searches.
Hide authors that were merged into another author.
Always display search bar.
Corrected default switch/own values.
Database model upgraded to support new fields (locked and hidden) -> new database file created will not be backwards compatible with older versions of BC. If you are using this app in conjunction with a Mac Desktop version, that app will need to be updated to 1.3 as well.
Very good app
I have been using the app for three or four years. I have over 3,000 books so it's essential if I am to avoid buying duplicates at a library sale or even online, if I'm not sure where I might have shelved a volume. Re: complaints about lack of multiple categories, grade level, etc: you can assign as many customized tags to a book as you want, and then search on the tag. Jaime has made a good tradeoff between putting too many fields in the database and supporting user flexibility. You're not paying Microsoft prices for this, after all
One caution: I started out taking pictures of my books and continued to do so for the old ones even after you could search and download web versions. But w 3000 books it stumbled. So I used the app's option to downgrade the resolution of existing photos and I only use available search-returned photos now. It's okay but still a little baulky at times--I suspect because of the number of records and remaining photos.
Jaime has always been very responsive.
A Thorough App, even better if...
I wish I could put a book in more than one collection, for example, "audiobooks" and "have read". I find the collections feature the fastest way to access various groupings of my books, and have seen one movie-listing app that allows this, very handy (though that app is no longer available in the App Store). I know there is a separate field for "type of book" and even "have read", but again, one list of categories in which one book may join several of, that would be great.
I like that I can have an abbreviated view of my lists without the book covers, I'm able to see more. Scanning and search features are great. I haven't made friends with the "Authors" category, as when I imported one book of collected essays by many writers, the 30 or so authors are all listed separately in this category as authors. I just would like to have recorded only the author(s) or editor(s) of each book I have entered, or each author I have entered.
My favorite features are the powerful database querying, and list grouping. Combine the two for some powerful db goodness: make 'smart' Collections with Boolean logic and then select a tab to further group your lists by any field in your records. The next best feature of the app is the capability to define custom fields. With custom fields, smart collections, and grouping-tabs, this app is as powerful as building a custom FileMaker database but way more convenient due to all the other stuff packed into this app just for book management (reviews, book info lookup, camera scanning of ISBN, etc.). Yes, there are some bugs (hence 4 vs 5 stars) but I have yet to find a better way to manage my library on my iPhone and iPad. I haven't tried the Mac app since the iOS app does everything I need.
