Customer Reviews

It’s the best!

I couldn’t live without it. It’s so easy to check when I’m at the grocery store or bookstore. I recommend it to people standing near me in the store. It keeps me from buying the same book twice, when the covers change so often. Love it!

Great app! Love using it.

Needs some work to cancel delete mode after deleting a book. Only way now is to force a hard shut down of the app and relaunch.

Are there plans for the dB file to be stored in the cloud so it can be viewed on different devices?

Cover images for some titles do not load up after adding a new book to BookCrawler.

Otherwise, best app out there for this purpose.

Getting worse instead of better; now broken

Most recent update: now crashes when I tap “Books.” Has gone from good to bad to unusable. As in literally unusable, crashing when I try to use it.

“Bug fixes”? More like bug INSERTIONS. I’m a programmer myself; I’d be ashamed to send out software in this condition.

What the #%+* did you just DO? Now all the book listings have both lines on the same line, so it’s unreadable. Until this is fixed, this app is USELESS. I can’t even do the simplest thing, read my list of books.

And this is not some weird marginal hardware — it’s an iPhone 7, a 256gb one at that, with the most recent iOS version.

I want the BookCrawler I bought three years ago back. It did all the same important things, and IT WORKED. Unlike what I have now.

Oh, and it errors out trying to back up the database. Really?

(Previous review)

I've been using BookCrawler for nearly two years. I depend on it in used book stores and book sales in particular. However, it is not as useful to me as it was even a few months ago. It seems like the programmer has the attitude "You're doing it wrong! I'll MAKE you use it my way!"

You can no longer view books by genre, collection, etc. Those options have been replaced with a rather awkward sort box that actually doesn't work very well. You'd think that with such a box there would be an option to sort backwards - that is, from Z to A or, what I need most, from newest to oldest so I can add things to the books I just entered. There isn't. If I sort by date I can only view from oldest to newest. Being able to list the newest first world make 'date' actually useful.

Today it insisted that I had exceeded the trial version and I should buy it. I bought it almost two years ago (and on my Mac as well). Signing into the App Store fixed that, but now I'm worried about what will happen if I'm in a place where I can't get connectivity. It's giving me grief about not being able to fetch data via cell ... on a WiFi-only device talking happily to the network (note that I'm writing this review). Every update seems to add bugs and remove features.

Tech support is non-existent. I'm having a critical problem - search is not working. (probably a database issue) The programmer has not deigned to reply to me. I'm patient, but it's been over a month.

That said, I don't know of any app that does the job as well or better. BookCrawler isn't as good as it was when I bought it, but it hasn't sunk below the capability of any other yet. I miss the features it used to have, but it's still the best option out there.

Update: as many other reviewers have said, every update seems to remove features and make formerly useful features awkward or impossible to use. If I hadn't bought it two years ago, I certainly wouldn't get it now.

The iOS 9.2 update fixed my search problem (no thanks to this dev) but for some bizarre reason you have to tap on the result list to actually get your search results instead of them just displaying like they used to. What's up with that, y'all?

And since the last BookCrawler update, when you do an ISBN scan, it puts the number of pages in the "format" field. What the...? This is something they should have fixed THE NEXT DAY. It still hasn't been, though.

One suggestion, which I'm putting here so maybe the developers see it, since they ignore email: Make it possible to disable auto-fill for any given field. For instance, publishers put all sorts of random things in 'genre' - not even the same things for books in the same series sometimes! I'd like to be able to ignore what's in the publisher's field and fill in my own later.

But, honestly, I'd be satisfied if they just rolled it back to the way it was a year ago, when it all worked.

Updated update: it's been almost a year since the last update to this app. Bugs that were reported back then have not been fixed. The developer ignores contacts from users. Apparently they've done all they care to do on this and are just going to keep collecting money from a buggy app for as long as the money keeps coming in. Every time I update this review I take off another star; in about 3 years it's gone from 5 stars to 2. I'm now at the point of actively seeking an alternative app, because it's clear that the developer is just leaving this one to die.

Oh, and the bug with it putting the page count in the format field remains unfixed. This is not rocket science, folks!
