Description

The Now is an app to help you retrain your mind to live more fully in the moment. The Now accomplishes this using a technique called continuous mindfulness training. The process works by using periodic cues, in this case, free iPhone push notifications with an audible chime and relevant message, to remind you to be fully focused on the present. The ultimate goal being to make mindfulness essentially continuous.

You may have been exposed to the concept of the now through reading a self help book on the subject, some of the most popular being “The Precious Present” by Spencer Johnson M.D., “Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle, and "Mindfulness: An Eight-Week Plan for Finding Peace in a Frantic World" by Mark Williams. Like all self help books, they only help if you put the concepts into practice and that is exactly what The Now was created for.

The mindfulness training runs for a 3 week cycle, with push notifications slowly increasing in frequency during the course, then tapering off in frequency as you become more mindful. There are enough quotes currently for 2-3 of these cycles before you would see repeated quotes. You can run the course as many times as you would like.

Helpful Reminders to Stay Present

For me, staying "out of my mind" and, instead, in the "here and now," is not easy at all. I find this app helpful in that it gives me reminders here and there to do this and, at the same time, offers helpful quotes or easy action items, such as "focus on your surroundings and the colors and textures."

I do have a suggestion though: Can you please add a badge icon? This way, if we miss the notification, we can see a badge icon notification to know that we should open up the app to view the notice. Additionally, it might be nice to add a range of time to receive the quotes, such as "between X & Y." That being said, I'm fine with the default, which seems to be during "first shift" hours, but someone else may want them to go off at a different set of times. It would also be nice to add the amount of notifications that one would like to receive. I believe the app is set up to send four per day. While I am okay with this, it would be nice to have the option to select other notification amounts, such as one, or two, or three, or five, etc. Finally, it would be nice to be able to change the notification sound.

All in all, I'm really enjoying the app. Great job!

Semi-disappointed

I think I misread the description or, at least, thought this app would be more than it was.

Yes, I appreciated the daily inspirational notes and quotes, but they only ran for 21 days, then stopped. There was no way to create any personal settings. I was kind of hoping this would be an indefinite source of daily inspirations that generated and appeared randomly, so I have to say I'm disappointed.

I did contact app support and they confirmed the description was outdated and referred to an option that existed in an earlier version.

Wonderfully helpful

Mindfulness is difficult to master. This app is very helpful in practicing this essential concept.

I would like the ability to have it just keep going...to have the cycle repeat automatically. Three weeks is not nearly long enough to soak mindfulness fully into my westernized mind. But I can always start the cycle over...
