Gardening Toolkit – the easy way to garden!

By Applied Objects

Open iTunes to buy and download apps.

THE GUARDIAN: "...with simple-to-understand advice on all manner of plant life and how best to treat them, it makes your phone as essential as a watering can."

Not sure what to plant and when to plant it? The Toolkit can you give the advice you need and so much more. This feature-packed app also tracks what's in your garden, keeps notes in a handy to-do list, finds your hardiness zone (in the USA) and even lets you search a photo-filled encyclopedia of more than 1000 plants.

The Toolkit is built on a sophisticated system that takes into account where you live, what season it is and when frosts are likely. It uses this data to make a list of suggested plants for your garden so you don't have to spend hours pouring over gardening books. NB: Works in the USA, Western Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

If you live in the USA, then simply enter your zip-code and the Gardening Toolkit will tell you your hardiness zone.

Here's where you keep track of what's in your garden. Once you've added a plant to My Garden‚ the Gardening Toolkit can tell you when the plant should be blooming or ready for harvest. You can even add your own photo so you can show your friends how your crops are doing!

Want to set a reminder to fertilize the roses next month? Quickly add a note, icon and the due date - easy!

With a growing list of more than 1000 herbs, flowers, fruit and vegetables the Gardening Toolkit is the handy guide you can carry with you. As well as photographs, the encyclopedia has information on flower colors, plant dimensions and light requirements that can be searched however you like - making it a great tool for planning landscaping too. Many plants now also have a direct link to how-to-grow articles on the web.

We're always updating the Gardening Toolkit with even more features so send us ideas for additions to the app so we can get cracking!

"If you do any gardening or just have some pots at hope to get started, Gardening Toolkit is a great app to have." (Appfreak blog)

"I downloaded your Gardening Toolkit, and I love it!  It has great versatility, and the ability to enter plants that were previously planted is wonderful. The advice and option to sort by plants recommended for a particular area is such a relief!" Feedback from Jay B.

Below average for xeric landscapes and flowers.

While this app has huge potential it is below average due to a limited database. I have 27 different annuals in my garden and the database only contains FOUR of them. Granted my yard is xeric, but none the less these flowers should be there.

It has five of the 18 perennials a very low percentage of flowers that are common in xeric and non-xeric landscapes.

In addition it does not contain a majority of vegetables I grow (most are common) and it has nearly none of my shrubs or ground cover. I give the app a pass on the lack of shrubs since its is a garden app.

I have had this app for over a year and have not seen updates to the database which one would think the developer would do to continue to bring the database up to speed.

No planning tool, otherwise nice.

Looking at the screenshots, etc. I expected this app to have a way to plan a future garden, not a visual layout necessarily, but a timeline at least. But it looks like you have to add your plants the day you plant them or after.

What would be great is if the app took zones into account to suggest a range of start times, both for "from seed" and "from plant". This would be a big time-saver, particularly for succession planting! Then presumably the planting alerts would be added to my to do list.

I tend to do all my planning in the dead of winter, and wanted to use this tool. Looks like it's going to be a paper calendar again for 2012. Maybe next year!

I downloaded the app last year and found it lacking in many ways. Since there has been updates I decided - I bought it try it again- ugh! While the updates are better there are still little things that don't seem to make sense.
1. You can't get to the creators by using the app. You have to go back to the App Store and find them again. What?!? Why is there not a direct link?
2. Choosing a garden naming it and then trying to add plants is horrid! A waste of time! There's no way to tap the screen and add a plant. You have to go add under my plants but! To add YOUR plants you can not assign them to a garden. So you are left with a list of plants uncategorized to your beds/yard. Isn't that the point of this app?

I think I'm fairly smart with apps but even reading the directions it is not helpful.
