Shredder, the most successful chess program ever, is now also available for the iPad. You can play against Shredder, analyze with him and solve chess puzzles. It offers the usual Shredder standard on your iPad.
In addition to the outstanding playing strength of the 12 times computer chess world champion, Shredder is also able to mimic the play of a human chess player with any playing strength. He even deliberately makes typical human mistakes in those levels.
Solve 1000 built in chess puzzles. Shredder keeps track of your performance and offers advice if needed.
You can adjust Shredder’s playing strength from beginner to master level. If you like, Shredder automatically adjusts his strength to yours. He even calculates an Elo rating for you. This is how the playing strength of chess players is typically measured.
During the game a coach is watching your moves and warns you if you are about to make a mistake.
See how you are getting better and better the more games you play and the more chess puzzles you solve.

What's New in Version 1.3.0
This update brings you chess clocks and awesome retina ready graphics.
We also added a "guest mode" to allow unrated games and puzzles if you let a friend play on your device.
You need iOS 5.0 or better to run Shredder now - so please update your device if you haven't done so already. If you don't want to update your device for any reason, your current installed version will continue working just fine, of course.
Please help us improving Shredder by rating it on every update. Thank you! :-)
Great with a few But If Only
Shredder's version is a well designed app and plays chess at an extremely strong level. But I rate it as 4th among available iPad chess apps. First, I place Hiarcs (especially for the most serious chess players) - not being able to import outside chess games is a serious drawback for Shredder and Hiarcs is loaded with features too. Second, Chess HD is great for beginners as its a visual treat (fun, fun, fun). Third, tChess Pro which looks great and has serious tools for serious players plus it supports finger gestures/swipes to control play. Regardless, do not doubt that Shredder for the iPad is an excellent version of its full Mac/PC version which I own. Bottom Line - if you want only one chess app to own then please consider all the chess apps that I have mentioned!
I like this app - the meter is a cool function and so are the puzzles. I have HIARCS also and I find that it is a bit easier on that app to jump in and out of the analysis, so one critique of Shredder would be that I don't personally find the GUI to be very intuitive. Overall a good bargain for a nice software.
It would be nice to somehow have a chess app that could help explain why a move is preferred rather than just numerical analysis.... But I suppose that's what a human coach is for. However maybe a developer could take the time to write brief verbal analysis of the chess problems themselves - this approach would be insightful for those interested in solving problems.
One of the Two Best
Challenging play, with a ton of puzzles that prompt you to find the best move in a given position. Excellent interface that allows you to customize every aspect of the user experience—the computer's rating/level of difficulty, the board, pieces, background, sounds, etc.
In my opinion, this and Chess Pro with Coach are the two best chess apps for the iPad for the money. Absolutely worth the 8 bucks I paid for it.
Overall, I highly recommend this program—especially for the returning/intermediate player.
